Anyone have an engine failure on a 10 or 09

Just curious how many of you have had major engine problems?

I just bought a 2010 Screw FX4 the week of Xmas. It just rolled 800 miles and the top end has to be torn apart. It just started ticking/knocking yesterday after start up. I thought maybe it was just cold (been single digits and neg. temps for the last week) but it never went away. I took it in today and they tore into it. They said a roller on one of the lifters seized up and in turn took out a cam. What I'm pissed about is they arent replacing the motor, just replacing the lifter and cam. It has 800 miles!! I dont know if I should push the subject more to try to get a new motor or even try to make them buy the truck back and I'll get another one. I know ***** happens but not at 800 miles. Im more worried about what metal shavings are still in the motor somewhere and could possibly take this motor out again.

Any ford techs here have any suggestions or ideas??!!

Sorry, rant over.

Sorry to hear you are having difficulties.

But, why replace the entire engine when it is not necessary?

Thanks

I agree, either try to get a new truck or new engine out of this. 800 miles is ridiculous for somethin to go wrong with it!

Although, they have good ones and they have bad ones.

The slightest metal shavings that are left over can cause engine failure. Theres no way to know if there is any left in there. And Im not about to have to take it back in because they wanted to fix it the cheaper way. That and you spend $45000 on a truck, not even go through 2 tanks of gas, have to have the top end of your motor torn apart and stuck driving some piece of **** mazda 6 from Enterprise Rent a Car while they are fixing your brand new truck and you tell me why you wouldn't want a new motor or truck. I'm a little ticked at the situation.

I would push for an engine or truck. The truck probably won't fly. I agree about metal shavings. It is a matter of principle. If all else fails, how about Ford picking up the tab on a large extended waranty on the motor?
Good luck. I feel your pain!
Let us know what they do.

The motor already has 5yr/100k warranty. If I keep it long enough I will hit years waaaay before mileage. I usually trade every 3 yrs or so.

Its not my F150 that ive only had for 3 weeks. Dont get me wrong it may be a great little car but its not for me. Im kinda partial to my truck and my mustang. They could at least get you into something similar for whats being worked on.

Damn right. They should have you in a respectable pick up truck while yours is under repair. On a side note, this type of heart ache is why I drive a 10 year old truck. Until the quality comes WAY up, and the customer apreciation comes WAY up, I will drive an older rig. Even though I tow 5+hrs into the mountains, in the dead of winter in weather in the -20's, I would rather risk driving an older rig, than risk the heart ache of dealing with FoMoCo over a new truck.

So, if they just fix your truck. Will you be worried about it for the rest of the 2 or 3 years you own it?

Not a chance in .... will you get them to buy your truck back. You're chances are slightly better at getting a new engine. But even if they gave you a new engine, it will be a remanufactured engine. So be careful what you wish for.

Plus, if you're not satisfied with the loaner they gave you. Speak up. When you went to pick it up or they delivered it to you. You should have told them. "This is unacceptable" I need a full sized truck.

The way I see it. Your dealership is doing just what's necessary. They are correcting the issue. Talk to your service advisor and mention your concern about metal shavings. It's quite possible that this failure did not produce any metal shavings.

The dealership can step out and help you if they want to. I will only buy a Ford because my dealership goes above and beyond on the service and warranty side. It is always in the service departments best interest to do as little as possible. Service manager first and I believe Ford still has regional service reps. Ask to have a meeting with your regional. Explain your concerns and how the outcome will determine if you will be purchasing any Fords in the future. Unhappy customers are more likely to discuss problems than happy customers.
I normally buy a new truck about every year and a half and have been since 1999. I've been lucky and not had to deal with the regional over anything serious.

sounds like a fluke, first engine issue I've heard of with the 20-10 models

you can ask them for a new motor but I highly doubt you'll get it, if you approach them with an attitude it won't work as well for you than if you sit down as a calm concerned owner...

good luck

we would NEVER replace a engine on anything for one bad roller rocker or lifter, unless there was engine damage and i have never seen one damage a engine.

and i have changed rockers/lifters and never had a complete failure due to it.

i know your truck is new and it frustrating, but if you have good people working on it all will be good, the 5.4L is bullet proof.

The way I see it if you are only going to have the truck for a couple years it really doesn't matter. Replacing the roller and cam is cheaper, but you still have the original engine. Many of the people who purchased the 04's with piston slap were complaining that the remanufactured replacement engine resulted in lower trade in value. If you only keep it a couple years the engine most likely will not fall apart, and you shouldn't suffer any value loss at trade-in. If the engine falls apart within the couple years you own it, then it should still be covered under warranty and a new engine should be on the way. It sounds to me like there is a very slight possibility that the engine goes bad and has to be replaced. If that happens I would be making all kinds of noise about the amount I paid for the truck and the quality I expect for that price, while at the same time looking at a replacement in the sales department. If the engine doesn't go bad then all is good, and you don't have to worry about the long term effects of the issue.

I also think it is BS that the engine died after less than 1000 miles, but it is a mass produced product and errors happen.
