Smile 4X4 vs. 4X2

I'm deciding between 2 silver 2009 F150's one 4X4 and one 4X2. Any pros and cons for either? Also do rims cost more for 4X4? Does 4X4 get same gas mileage as 4X2? Also black or chrome rims? 18 or 20's? What kind? Also what kind of sound system? Any opinions?

4x4 for sure. i went the 4x2 to save some money but regret it. rims will be the same price. 4x4 gets a little worse mpg, 1 or 2. black rims id go with. id go with the 18's. sound system? if you have the money. thats what i think.

Where do you live, I live in Hawaii so 4x2 has always been the way for me. If your going to be driving in the snow or do alot outdoors go with the 4x4. Our get a two wheel slam it down drop on a SC and go smoke some imports it's fun.

I dont' want to assume anything, especialy seeing as your post # is really low. Will this be your first truck? You do realize the 4x4 is four wheel drive and 4x2 is two wheel drive, right? So, yes, there is significant difference - weight, handling, mpg, etc.

The best thing to do is drive as many variations as possible.
Good luck.

If you plan on spending much time at all if road then go with the 4x4. If you will be on the street %99 of the time go with 2x4. It's that simple!

If you ever go off road or ever drive in bad weather like snow and ice then I would go with a 4x4 but if you live in southern cali or florida and stay on the street then i'd go with a 2wd

Most people are fine with a 4X2, saves you a signifigant amount of $$$ and will be easier on fuel. I opt for the 4X4 because of our harsh winters here in Atlantic Canada and I like to play with it a bit.

no disrespect to any 2wd owners, imo 4x4 is the only way to go........ 2wd is a waste of a pickup truck..

OK, getting back to the OP, where are you? I am assuming if you are asking, you are not an offroading kind of guy. That being the case, the question comes down to when you would use it. If you live in an area where you will get significant snow, then a 4x4 is worth looking at. However, just because you get snow doesn't mean you need 4x4. 4x2 with a good set of snow tires will do under most conditions.

2wd is fine if you know how to drive. Put weight in the bed and watch your speeds. My family has never owned a 4wd truck and my dad was owned nearly 10 trucks all 2wd. If you have harsh winters, 4wd is nice to have, but it wont save a moron driver.

What about people that live in areas where bad weather doesn't affect them and they need to haul or tow something? In this sense I disagree with you but it is you Opinion. I think it all boils down to what he's trying to do and where he lives. I live in NYC with a 2wd but I don't drive during the winter, if I did I would have went with a 4x4.

Pro's 4x4
It's a 4x4

Con's 4x4
Slightly less fuel efficient
Slightly more maintenance

Pro's 4x2
Slightly more fuel efficient

Con's 4x2
Getting embarrassed when having to ask to be pulled out when stuck

Personally I'd rather have 4x4 and not need it, than really need it (even just once) and not have it.

^Agreed. 4x2 has a higher payload and towing than a 4x4 as well. Also less maintnenance and less expense if a 4x4 component breaks. 4x4 is fine, but technically a 4x2 is a more capable truck, but less capable Offroad vehicle. I have been through 3 trucks and several ice storms/1ft or less of snow in Oklahoma, never have I been stuck. Not saying that 4x4 isn't nice to have, but definitely not a necessity. Especially if you spend 5% or less time offroad in conditions bad enough to warrant a 4x4. (Dirt roads and dry fields don't count as 4x4 conditions)
