Scroll down towards the bottom to the "Grip Not Skid" video with the yellow background.

GM has run the Eaton option G80 "gov-lock" rear diff for a long time. I blew a few up in my 95 Tahoe. They are great as long as you leave them stock. Bog tires or big HP and they break. But doesn't about anything factory...
They do lock up there is a good YouTube video showing it working against a limited slip or clutched rear diff. My Eaton TruTrac has been my favorite so far.

The roller hill is a neat test like ice.

Another note is that they will not engage above 25mph so the soccer mom won't loop it on wet streets like a positrac can.

I've had great luck with my 06 silverado Z71 with the G80 rear locker. I've got 120K miles on it running 285 mud terrains on it since 1K miles. I've kept up with the fluid changes as required, maybe this helps??? No issues with it. This truck sees off road use at least once a week in some nasty slippery clay like conditions. I've beat on the truck pretty hard but I don't do a lot of burn outs which is the key to killing a G80 locker.

I wish ford would put a locking rear end in their entire product line, you'd be amazed at how far a 2wd with a locker and good tires can go. My 03 F-150 FX4 didn't pull worth a crap in 2wd with the Limited slip compared to the GM locker. If I got one rear wheel off the ground the unloaded tire would spin and the LSD would only "rock" the truck not keep digging.

The G80 is avail in the 8.6, 9.5. 10.5 (if that' the right size) and 11.5".

The locker has been out since at least the early 90s.

I do like ford's on command system and would love to have that in my next lariat truck. I'm just not a huge fan of the FX4 paint scheme.

Very true. My FJ was 2wd, but I was able to go where my buddies could with their 4wd FJs. All I had was a 3" lift and 295s. It's all about picking the right line and keeping momentum and your tire pressure just right.

True. I meant a locker in general and was replying to the "GM playing catch up" comment from earlier.

Also, maybe your FX4 gets stuck more easily because it is much heavier.
The Ford E-Locker locker is on when you engage 4wd. You cannot turn it on/off independently.

It could be because it is heavier but even on muddy or snowy dirt roads it wants to go sideways much easier. The Ford is the better overall truck for me(except the rear end), but like I said I want it all.

No it's not. You can choose locked or unlocked in either 4-high or 4-low.

I think he meant the ability to turn it on in 2wd.

How do you turn it on/off when in 4wd high? Specifically what button do you hit in the truck? I don't own a 2009+ yet, but have driven 3 for different periods of time and I must have missed a switch for it. I looked too, because I thought that would be sweet to have the option of 4wd locked or 4wd unlocked.

You just pull the 4WD **** out towards you to engage the locker. Somewhat like how you turn on the fog lights

You pull the 4wd button out when in 4wd. The dash will tell you when it is locking and when it is locked.

You don't "hit" any button. You "pull" the selector **** out and it locks the rear. It's only available on the FX4's for now, but I'm sure Ford will add it or some kind of locker to thier entire truck line.

I think the Ford locker opens up over a low speed governor also? It would be easy to run a switched wire and diode to the diff so you could lock it in 2wd. It is just a 12v switched circuit.
