I don't recall what my '97 & '98 F-150's got for MPG, but I agree that they were fantastic trucks. The surprising thing is how quiet they were compared to my '04, and even my '09 Plat. The '04 had tons of noises and a horrible engine whine, but even my '09 Plat has little creakys and noises inside. My '98 which I had for 6 years had zero noises, same with my '97 which I only had 1 year. Very odd.

I commute approx 40 miles (70 km's round trip) of highways, with 1 to 2 miles of in town driving.

First leg of my test... Speed limit driving only, with cruise. Our limits are 90 and 80 km/hr here in canada, which is like 58 mph to 53 mph or so. So far i'm averaging about 16.8 mpg (veh info). I'm used to driving 110 km/hr which is just shy of 70 mph... I'm checking to see what the difference is in fuel economy between grandpa driving, and my regular driving style.

It's painful going that slow... ya, i'm saving fuel.. but i'm also on the road for a longer period of time. on my next tank, if i only see a savings of a few mpg's, than i'm going to pony up the cash for the benefit of driving it like a normally do and never worry about squeezing out the max mpgs.

I've also got a tonneau cover (not sure if it helps) and the towing mirrors (definately doesn't help). hoping for great results.

Alrighty...

first tank... I travelled 757 km's using 112 Liters of fuel. 14.79 Liters per 100 km's, or 19.1 miles per imperial gallon, 15.9 miles per US gallon....

This was all easy driving, speedlimits only. no jackrabbits, no passing (cause really, driving speed limit, your the slowest veh out there). first part of my test went ok (except for the big scratch i found around my fuel door.. GRRRRR). I have to say, it's really not that impressive. I would get a slightly better mileage in my 2006 GM 5.3 liter 4x4, regular driving.

SO, this tank, regular driving. I'll be travelling approx 20 km/hr more on highway, and 10 in the city... will post up the results soon.

update on my latest MPG (i still dont get how some people are claiming better mpg than a prius!! geeez

5.4, 3.73, 20 inch wheels, 30 gal fuel tank

mixed hwy (50%), city (30%), stop and go (20%). after burning through the entire tank i averaged: 13.2 mpg.

my driving style? hwy speeds are typically 70-75mph. around the city i take it pretty easy but i do put the foot down if i need to make a quick lane change or going up hills. stop and go, i just crawl along, not trying to worry about darting in and out of traffic (i hate it when people do that).

13.2 mpg

seriously this is awesome real world data, appreciate you sharing this

i'm glad i'm not the only one averaging about low 13'ish MPG. i thought there was something wrong with my truck! anyhow, i will update again later tonight (time for a fill up) but so far the computer reads 13.1 MPG again mixed hwy/city/stop-go, hwy speeds about 65. maybe a bit more city driving this time around.

again, thanks for sharing...

Another variable worth posting along with gears/model/4x4/loaded/unloaded would be the tire size and tire pressure. I am on the stock skinny 255/70/17's over inflated slightly to 39 front and 40 rear (have adjusted twice since colder weather arrived). I have 3.55 gears, 4x4, screw, 3 ppl and 300lbs of gear average, and short distance towing of boat, 80% highway thus far and ave around 12.5 L/100km which equates to 18.8 US MPG. I have checked MPG by hand and it is very close to the computer.
No complaints.

FYI filled up in MI yesterday, I can't believe how cheap gas is in the USA!! In Canada we are still paying 50% higher and our ethanol % is 5 points higher which contributes to $****ty mileage! What a kick in the A$$$. $2.39 per gallon vs $1.00 per litre.

I am looking at some 285/70/17's and am curious what the MPG damage will be.

alright as promised... i filled my tank coming home from work tonight and get ready for this...... 12.5 MPG!!!! hand calculated. the computer says 13.2, but when i hand calculated it, came out to 12.5 MPG. so the computer is about 0.7 mpg "optimistic"

the stats:

09 f150
5.4L engine
platinum edition
stock 20 inch wheels and tires (cant recall exactly the tire size but i think its something like a 275/60??)
3.73 gears
4300 miles on the odo
completely unloaded, no passengers, no cargo, no towing, just me (190 lb male)
completely stock truck, no bed cover, completely stock
tire pressures all around = 39 PSI
burned up 34 gals
drove 426 total miles
12.53 mpg

what else can i say?? oh the gas:
76 brand gasoline
87 octane (10% ethanol blend)
located in the greater seattle, WA area so we're at sea level

the driving style:
60% hwy (65 mph average)
20% hwy stop and go (15-20 mph average)
20% city driving (35-45 mph average)
never did a WOT run
never "raced" anyone
didnt allow the truck to idle for longer than 5 mins
just your basic dude going to work, coming home, couple trips to the grocery store, church on sundays, no 4x4 usage, basic pavement driving, nothing special folks, cant get more average than me

am i the only guy on planet earth with getting 12.5 mpg mixed driving? sounds like it after reading this thread and several other threads from several other forums, i believe i have the worst MPG and if so, then its time for me to get the truck in to the dealership for a diag...

i filled her up with 87 oct Chevron gas this time (same 10% ethanol blend). i'll post in about 1 and a half weeks with those mpg's. i think i'll keep a log like brew1.

I on average have been getting 14mpg mixed driving using the 10% blend. I got 10mpg with the E85 with the same driving. The tune didn't help me at all, in fact I took it out of the truck cause I didn't care for it.

I am going on a 1500 mile round trip this coming weekend, I will get some good numbers here.

One very important thing to keep in mind is the ethanol content. My buddy bought a alcohol test kit for fuel, and MO has some pretty high ethanol content, which would explain why my 1st gas tank out of MO alway does 2mpg worse than when I get up into IL, WI, and then MI. My last truck would get 13mpg (lifted/supercharged) on the 1st tank, and then 16mpg on the later tanks, big difference. Also, don't buy that 89 octane fuel that cost the same price, it just contains more ethanol and you will burn more fuel, that is it.

I didn't use that one but I did use excel to track it. I use autoslate on my Palm but can only have 4 vehicles total so I use excel for the truck, works for me.

I think I would sell my truck if I was going through the tank that fast. Under ideal conditions (not much stopping and keeping it between 45 and 60 mph) I get 21-22 mpg but a lot of mixed driving (25% county roads, 10% freeway and 60% around town) only returns 17-18 mpg. If I was getting 12.5 mpg in mixed driving I would sell it.

2010 F-150 xlt 4X4 SuperCab
4.6L 3V
3.73 gears
stock wheels with 255/75/17's @ 39 psi
Backflip covering the bed
2500 miles
Fuel: 87 Octane Shell (10% ethanol blend)
Between sea level and 4000 feet
No significant mods other than tires

hey i see you're located in my neck of the woods... maybe all this rain lately has something to do with the poor gas mileage?

i've got a bakflip F1 coming to me and i'm hoping that'll help the mileage. but first, i've got an appoint with the bellevue ford dealership tomorrow morning. they're going to hook it up to the computers and do some read-outs. 12.5 MPG is definitely a shocker... i mean, talk about HORRIBLE gas mileage. 12.5 MPG, honestly... what a kick in the *****

i was driving an 07 chevy tahoe prior to my f150 and mixed driving that thing got 14 MPG all day long without even trying. v8 motor about the same size, same HP, little less torque, more weight though, 1/2 ton suv. when trying i would get almost 15 MPG (bit more hwy)! the worst i saw was about 13.5 MPG and that was when we were metro van pooling with a group so i would drive my suv to the park and ride down the street about 3 miles from my house (engine barely even warm when i got there). a full tank of that and i still got 13.5 MPG! hell, if i did something like that with my f150, i'm convinced i'd see something like 6 MPG.

Well I definitely would not sell a vehicle I really liked based on gas mileage, especially this truck.

The truck has window sticker rate at 14 - 18 mpg and I expected to get below what was listed, especially around town.
All of our cars get below what the low range is on the window sticker. Our Acura TL was rated at 18-27 I think and we get consistently 16 around town. I think my Honda Civic SI was rated at 24 to 30 and I get 21 around town.
My Honda Goldwing gets consistently below what it was rated at.

My old POS Dodge 2000 Dakota with a 4.7 would only get 11-12 around town so the F150 getting 12-14 doesn't bother me one bit...
