My '09 doesn't leak (so far anyway) but my '05 did a bit around the 3rd brake light housing. Mine started due to the housing getting hot and warping a bit - then water could get through. a silicone bead around the housing base and in the screw hole wells took care of it though.

Truck at the dealership right now!

Thanks for any help.
I had my truck for 3 days when i found my leak. Same spot. The service took it all apart and said there was a pin hole in the the seam weld. They sealed that and ran water on it. They found that it leaked around the seal on the rear window. They removed it and replaced the seal.

I tell u what, it's pretty sick looking to see all of your interior taken out. They assured me that it would be fixed.

First big rain here after getting my '09, and I've got the leak. Mine comes in at the driver rear of my SCrew. I've got to make an appointment for dealer service, as the seat is water-spotted. They had this truck for three months before sale, so I'm guessing it's leaked the whole time. I hate issues like this on new vehicles! Especially since the previous generation had a leak issue as well. Guess Ford missed that issue in the model refresh.

Window man looked at rear window today, figured out it was the 3rd brake light, and not the rear seal of the window. Service advisor, with a straight face, says, "Good thing you're still under warranty. The 3rd brake light on an '09 is $489." I asked him if I could have the gold off of it. $489 for a brake light, yeah right. I bought a new one for my '04 and I remember it being under $100 (maybe even under $75).

I thought this service advisor was different from previous ones. Appears that I was wrong.

Yeah, it should definitely be the third brake light. I just fixed mine myself with some clear silicone and have not had any more problems yet. Now I have the sagging head liner to deal with. I love the 09 F150, but these issues take some of the luster off the new model year as Ford should have caught things like this. Oh well, great truck otherwise.

I just bought a 2009 F150 Supercrew KR last month. Today we had a hard rain in San Antonio (finally) and behind the rear seat it was very wet. A large puddle of water was standing on the rear carpet. The river of water appeared to be coming from the rear window (around the middle seatbelt area). At first, I thought maybe a left the rear window open there was so much water. However, all windows were tightly closed.

I'm taking the truck to the dealer tomorrow. They are giving me a loaner without much of a fight which makes me think this is a known issue. I'm concerned because this truck was on the lot for 6 months before sale. Don't know if there is mold under the carpet, etc.

The headliner was not wet, so I really don't suspect the third taillight / rear bedlight. I'll keep you updated on the outcome.

Service department at the dealership says it was the third brake light (overhead stop light) that was leaking. They have to order a new part, which will take several days to get. In the mean time, they are storing my truck in the shop out of the rain, but they are not providing me with a rental for the weekend.

FordCrazy99 - take your truck back to the dealer and make them replace the headliner and order the new part for the third tail light. It will be covered under the warranty.

troyf150, are you getting a new headliner also? Do you know if the dealership found any problems with or under the headliner? I have no odors or outwardly apparent problems with my headliner. Let us know if you have any headliner issues associated with the water leak. I'll check with my dealer and see how things go with them.

Thanks

They said my headliner was OK (and it looks fine to me). They cleaned the carpet and said there was no mold under the carpet. 5 other trucks are currently at the dealership that need the new third stop light. However, these parts are on national backorder and currently unavailable. The dealer said I was lucky to get one of the last parts available. Other trucks with this problem will be treated with masking tape until a new light can be obtained. This sounds like a big problem with many 2009s. I plan to test my new light at the car wash to make sure it really is fixed. Good luck!

Same here. Leaking hard around the 3rd brake light. I am worried cause the truck has a mold smell to it now. Not sure if I should demand a new headliner and a new seat.

Would it be wrong to run a bead of clear caulk around the light? Mine isn't leaking, I'm just thinking preemptively.

I am dry so far...

Just cruious for those that have the thrid brake light leak, when was your truck manufactured? Mine was build in June '09, so I am hoping that I will not have this issue.

C'mon Ford, you knew about this already...

I recall this (3rd brake leak) being an issue with the '04-'08 model. Wouldn't Ford have addressed this for their refresh in '09? Seems odd they wouldn't have looked hard at this aspect since it was an issue with the previous truck, which has a lot of similarities to the '09. Crazy, in my humble opinion.

Then again, the massive brake dust on my '09 and the lack of LED tails and rear window defrost shows me that some things do continue on just the same no matter how little sense they make. Ah well. Supposedly 2 of those are fixed for '10, and progress on MPG finally pretty soon too. Guess I should be happy the '09-'10 (and '97-'03) are a lot quieter than that noisy '04-'08. Guess we'll see what 2014/2016 holds.

My truck was built in January 2009. I removed the third light and put a bead of clear silicone around the gasket and remounted the light, then sealed the small crack between the light and the body of the truck with another bead of clear silicon. I did this in June right after I bought the truck and so far have had no more problems and you cannot tell I ever had the light off the truck. Fortunately, I caught the problem before there was any odor or stains in my truck.
