While towing with my '05 Super Duty diesel I could feel the engine braking as I stopped in tow/haul mode. I don't feel the engine braking with my '09. Does the 6-speed in the f150 not operate in the same manner?

 

Yeah, I found this cool/nifty feature out on a E350 V10 with the 5 speed TorqShift while in tow/haul mod.

The F150 doesn't have it probably because it isn't used like a SD or Econoline in a HD manner.

That's an extra bonus thrown in when buying a heavy duty truck. An F150 is like a heavy duty minivan or SUV these days -- not a real truck persay.

But I can emulate it with my 5 speed manual...

 

It is supposed to have engine braking but hauling my trailer yesterday I felt little if any.

 

If memory serves from my test drive a couple months back the shifter has a 3-2-1 range you can manually shift into. This is what you would use to get the engine braking your after.

 

in tow/haul mode if you gently tap the brake pedal it will down shift the trans

 

Yes, the engine braking on the 09 is NICE when towing... but you have to be in tow/haul mode.

 

I definitely felt the downshifting/engine braking when in tow/haul mode, but my trailer loaded only weighs ~3500#

 

The information regarding the tow/haul mode is in the owner's manual including the application of downshifting while in tow/haul mode.

That little user's manual comes in handy sometimes.
