How do I remove steering wheel?
How to remove steering wheel on 2009
Just got my new steering wheel. I have the Medium Stone (FLINT) interior and upgraded to a leather steering wheel. P/N 9L3Z-3600-AD.
I need to know how to remove the old wheel. I know on the old ones you just remove two caps and screws and then take the airbag off, etc. I looked at my 09's wheel and could not figure out how to remove the airbag. Anyone have a clue?

After looking at the new wheel, it appears I may have to put 3 small screwdrivers into the sides and bottom of the wheel and release 3 catch mechanisms. Way more complicated than it has to be in my opinion. I'm still looking for advice from someone who may have done this though, otherwise I will report my findings later this week when I attempt it myself.
How To
OK, I got it done on my own so now I will share for everyone else who may want to do this.
The red arrows indicate approximately where you have to insert a small screw driver. The screw drivers have to be inserted from the sides and bottom of the wheel. You will see the small openings. You almost have to have 4 hands to do this. I'm sure Ford has a "special" tool for this. You have to simultaneously depress the 3 pins while pulling on the airbag. This will let it come off. You then remove the steering wheel just like any other wheel. Also, don't forget to disconnect the negative battery terminal and then depress the brakes and wait a minute or two before you start messing with the airbag. Took me about 20 minutes to do. It would take me 5 minutes if I had to do it again.

Just to give you an idea of how the airbag locks to the steering wheel. The springs depress to reveal a inset that locks on the pins in the wheel. You depress the pins against a spring to release the airbag.

Here is the Finished Product.

I've tried every screwdriver and punch in my toolbox from every angle, and still no luck. Been trying to get it for 2 hours now. Very frustrated. Please help.
How do I remove steering wheel on my 2009 F-150xlt crew? I just bought another 09 steering wheel from eBay. The current one just has the cruise control buttons. The new one has cruise control and the radio controls and Bluetooth. Wanting to swap them out but don't have a clue where to start. If it works then step two would be to have it control my radio. Please can anyone help?
Looks to me like you would do it exactly the same way the OP showed you. His was the same model year truck. DO make sure you disconnect the battery and discharge any residual electrical charge before you start though! You do NOT want that airbag going off in your face.
