Tailgate step is hit with truck buyers

Doug Scott, Ford's truck marketing manager, said the optional tailgate step on this year's redesigned Ford F-150 pickup is even more popular than he expected.

During a recent trip to Florida, Scott said he had a chance to talk with customers about the redesigned pickup, and its various options.

"I was just amazed at how many customers just couldn't stop talking about the tailgate step and the box side step," Scott said.

The tailgate step is a tubular steel step that can be pulled out of the truck's tailgate so that it can be easier to step onto the truck. It costs about $350.

About 25% of all customers who have purchased or ordered the redesigned pickup since it went on sale in October have purchased the optional tailgate step, Scott said.

I love the tailgate step. Get a lot of people in lowes asking about it. Also the bed extender seems to draw attention.

Can you use a drop in bedliner with the bed extender?

I'm at the young age of 25, but love the step. The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't lay flat across the tail gate. I just wished there was some way to sink it more into the tailgate

Mine has it just because it was there. I haven't used it and doubt I will much but think it is a good diea and worth it for the price.

Are you pressing it in far enough to engadge the lock mech. If you dont push it in it will not fit flush with the tailgate. Mine sits perfect and the only way you know it's on there is the 2 gaps either side that are very small.

I wonder what the weight limit is on that tailgate step. I feel I'd break the thing off since I weigh 330 pounds.

I have had about 300-320lbs on it so far and it didnt have a problem. I recon it could take double that but i cant see it having to very often. me and my bro in law was lifting a heavy pressure washer which weights in at about 180-200lb and i weight about 185. He was also standing on the tailgate as well so in total there must have been nearly 600lb on the tailgate it's self.

I want it for my 2005.

It would make life easier with a lifted truck.
