Gear options, 3.73, 4.10, 4.30?

I may have missed it somewhere in all the excitement, but has anyone seen the gear options? Or have they not released that info yet?

well I do not know if ford has released this info. but truck trend posted ratios of both the transmissions and the rearends. I do not know if I trust truck trends info as I seen several inacurate things in the article. but the gear ratio might be right and it did not mention any gear ratio higher than the 3.73 in the rear end. I was disipointed in the ratios in the transmission. the lower gears were ok. there were two gear ratios lower than our current 1st gear. which will be great for take off. but they could have made the 6th gear higher than ours to help those of us suffering from poor gas milage on the freeway at speeds of 70 mph. they kept the high gear about the same as our current one. I can not tell you the exact ratios as I did not write them down. except 6 gear is .69:1 there is a link to this article some where arround this site.

6R75 1st, 4.17: 2nd, 2.34: 3rd, 1.52: 4th, 1.14: 5th, 0.87: 6th, 0.69

These are the same ratio in my Expedition. I have the EL (weight is 6700 lbs w/ me and my "gear") 4x4 w/ the 18s, the gearing is great and I get about 18 to 19 mpg in a 64 mile round trip which includes bumper to bumper highway traffic and average speeds up to 75. If you just drive at 75 w/ both A/Cs on you'll get 20 MPG easy, 18 w/ a head wind. It tows great and the trans is always in the right gear.

1st gear out of the hole is great, it's plenty to get going with a trailer in tow or merge in traffic. From a roll it pulls hard all the way to 100 mph. I went from a 06 5.3L 1500 Z71 w/ 33" tires and 3.42 gears and this feels great. I'm sure when I go to 35"s I'll loose a lot of power but it'll look good.

Do you think that with the same 5.4 with little to no improvement, but with the new 6-speed, that it will pull off the line faster?

My only complaint about power is the fact it takes a bit to get moving, when you're in the left lane and the 2 right lanes start going before you do after a red light it's rather sad. Once the truck is up to speed it's fine, my only complaint is speed off the line. Not going fast, I could care less, I bought a truck and it'll go 60-70 easy, I just want some more OOMPH from a stop to accelerate or to merge into traffic when getting on the highway, scary sometimes when it won't move onto the highway and get going.

Think the 6-speed will help even if the 5.4 doesn't change at all?

I think they should offer 4.88's so people can tow more than a F250.

I have the same 5.4 that is out now, it does move a lot better, even with the truck being heavier it does move out faster then a F-150 (i've run a few at work Screw 6.5bed 4x4) and I'm slightly faster, off the line i'm much faster. So in short, yes the 2 extra gears make a huge difference (I've got 3.73s in mine)

you are telling me with the same gear ratio. and a rig 600 lbs heavier than mine and the same engine you are getting 4 better mpgs than me. this sounds like a bit of a fish story to me. maybe you are driving down hill both ways. the only thing I can think of is if you are running smaller tires. I am running 33's

Nothing fishy, come on down and take a ride. They are the stock 31.8" tires, not enough to make a huge difference. 2 extra gears does two things, it make it much easier to get up to speed with less work from the engine, it also give a slighly lower crusing RPM. I had a 03 ext cab sb fx4 F-150 that got a constant 14.7 so it's not funny numbers. I think there is a different tune that goes into the 5.4 matted to a 6 speed. To be honist, the 6 speed makes the expedition feel like a different truck.

Thanks Monte, appreciate the real-world feedback.

Surprised there aren't others on here who also own the new expy with the 5.4 and 6-speed to give us their opinions.

There are a few here, but another site has quite a few on there. It's interesting to see the different MPG reports. Most are 14+ in town and 17/18+ on the highway. 7-9 MPG towing at 8K lbs+

having taller tires is like having a taller gear so it would actually give you better mpg. unless they are much wider then you have more friction and drag.

with my truck on 37's 3.55 gears I have consistently got 23mpg. my tires also have a solid center instead of ***** that should slightly help.
