Cam Phaser problem

I purchased my 2009 in March of this year. It is currently at the dealer with a bad cam Phaser, it has 12,906 miles on it. Is this an unusual problem? What other problems can I expect to have down the road.

Set it to stun, that should help.

Lol aggie. The Cam Phaser issue occurs randomly it seems for a lot of 2004-10 trucks with the 5.4L 3V. It's under warranty, so just have it fixed. It may happen again in 10 miles, or it may never happen again.

Any symptoms of this cam phaser problem before you took it to the dealer? I have a 09 5.4 and I seem to be hearing a little valve noise (just a guess) when I am going to through drive throughs. My first F150 and maybe I just paranoid.

I had both of them done on my 04 on warranty they were supposed to be redesigned in 06 I always suspected wasn't really re-designed just a cheap fix until the 5.0 comes out??

It's a spring loaded timing gear that basically advances and retards the cam timing. They're found behind the front timing cover and attached (obviously) to the cam. You would hear a ticking/knocking sound under 1k rpm once the motor warmed up. It was mainly the '04's and '05's that had the issue but, I guess it would be possible for it to happen on the later ones. 90% of the time, it was just the driver's side of the engine that would do it. The tsb also said that if the noise continued after cam phaser replacement that the lashers should go ahead and be replaced. Ford wouldn't pay the tech to do both while he was already in there, besides, you wouldn't know if the lashers were bad (aside from obvious signs) till you got it back together. I did a TON of cam phasers when I was at the dealer, only twice did I need to do both sides though.
