Wow...this issue has been around since 04, you'd think ford could do somthing about it, way to go ford. I know it's being discontinued but still, c'mon.

So are they adjusting engine timing to eliminate the knock? I am still not overly sure what it is the cam phaser does.

advancing cam timing reduces combustion temps which reduces NOX(oxides of nitrogen). This is why the 3v does not have an EGR valve.

So, I just bought an 04 FX4 with the 5.4 on Saturday. It has 52XXX on the clock. To stand outside this thing and listen to it idle, it sounds like a diesel BAD. I have been asked by 3 different friends if it was a diesel! I have a 30 day, 1000 mile warranty that covers any engine part that touches oil. Should I get the dealer to replace this? Or should I just say F-it since it will come back anyhow? Is it dangerous to run it this way? Are there any known long term problems with letting it go?

Yes, take it to the dealer if you have a warranty and have it fixed. It will not neccessarily come back again, all the ones I ever replaced never came back. No, it's not dangerous if it's not done, it's not chewing anything up.

Having noisy cam phasers is a byproduct of having a 5.4 3v engine. Having noisy cam phasers does not mean anything. Some of you need to learn about the VCT system on these 5.4 3v engines.

Also learn why you need to have a good oil filter on your truck, preferably a Motorcraft with an anti drain back valve. The VCT system runs on oil pressure, so keeping the oil there is a must.

Click the Flat Rate Tech video link in my sig and watch the video.

I have watched the videos, and I have an understanding of how it works. I also understand that its a gas engine and shouldnt sound like a powerstroke!! Ford F'd up and then made a replacement that supposedly dont go bad, so I will have the dealer put that in it. Just dont want the noise, it bothers me to hear it.

No worries.

I'll be having mine done when my truck gets into the 150,000 mile range or so along with the timing chain and tensioners.

So, i have been doing some reading around trying to understand if the new phasers are a fix. Some say the noise has a very high chance of never coming back, and some say its just a lotto. Does anyone know if the phasers have been updated, or if they are putting the same design parts back in? Also, I dont know what kind of oil is in the truck right now since i just bought it. Do you think putting in the Motorcraft synthetic will help the noise at all?

I was going to take my 04 to the dealer to get this lifter-phaser issue addressed, but after reading 'ALL' the comments from all the F150 owners with the Triton engine ..I think I'll just wait till it blows up and do an engine swap to a 2 valve or go to an Import( which I'm really against) but after being a Ford owner for more than 25 years..this issue has gotten the best of me.My last Ford gave me 250 k and 15 years of good times. I don't think I should be going thru these issues with only 60k. One dealer says one thing and the other say something else. What happened to the good old days when you could bring out your tools and be able to fix just about any problems. These dealers are only after you hard earned money. I remember one of my first vehicles was a T--o-a that I paid 300.00 dollars and last me 6 years. It looked like crap ..but it ran. Now I have a 30k dollar truck that I have to sink money into with only 4 payments left.If anyone has gotten this lifter / phaser issue fixed and has had no further problems...please respond cause I would really like to keep my truck..but not if I have to keep sinking money into it every couple of years. Normal maintenance is understandable, but 2 grand for this and 1 gran for that...it shouln't be like that. Please respond. Thank You fellow Ford owners.

Is the cam phaser issue only limited to the 5.4L? I have a 2009 4.6L 3V and when I go through drive thrus I can hear the echo off the wall of the annoying ticking, almost rattling, noise. It is intermittent and the first time I took it to the dealer it decided not to do it. I finally got it to the dealer and they were able to hear it and tried to diagnose it. The noise is the loudest from the drivers side valve cover. They think it is the PCV valve rattling and sending the noise through the rubber hose and into the valve cover where it echos. They are replacing the PCV valve and sending me on my way to test it out. I have my doubts about it being the PCV valve. Any suggestions?
