Maybe someone here can help with this. I've got an 04 F150 FX4. The vin says it has a 5.4l 2v. Interesting thing is, the engine in it is a 4.6l 2v. And the tag under the hood verifies it is a factory installed 4.6.
Anyone encounter this before? It's a problem right now because I need to replace the engine. I'm having issues at the parts dealer... I give them the vin, and well, you can guess what happens!
I've been considering putting in a crate 4.6, but I'm not sure things will match up.
Any thoughts?

The oddball is me! Sorry wasn't trying to confuse, just didn't edit before posting.
Let me correct myself. My new style has a 4.6l engine, and the Ford translation of the vin agrees. But, like you said, it should be 5.4. Everytime I enter "2004 F150 FX4" into a parts site they try to sell me 5.4 parts.
vin numbers 5 - 8 are X14W, and 10 is 4

Looks like I got a real live factory Frankentruck!
You're right glc, it is early, the build date is 06/04. Didn't they make the switch in body styles mid 04? I think I remember someone telling me that. I appreciate the advice. That should simplify things when it comes to ordering. I'll have to go to my local wrecking yard and see if a model made later in the year looks the same under the hood. Wonder if they threw a new style body over an '03 - '04 drivetrain? Guess I need to take a closer look.

Nope, that would be a very late 04. That makes it even more strange. You sure the build date isn't 06/03?
The first new body style was built in 06/03 as a 2004 model. The old body style was continued into the 2004 model year as the F150 Heritage with leftover 2003 parts, the last one built for the US market was in 08/04. They continued building a regular cab XL through 2008 for the Mexican market.

What do the fender badges say? Does it have FX4 decals on the bed sides?
Note that there is nothing in the VIN that positively identifies it as a FX4, that's digits 5-7 which only identify it as a Supercab Styleside 4wd. I'm betting you have a XL, STX, or XLT, the fender badges will say which..
