Back to the original issue - a crate 4.6 for 2004-2006 should drop right in.
So I wonder why it always comes up "FX4" when I enter the vin? Must be a default. Well, thanks glc, everything fits. The only variance I see so far is it's an automatic. At least now I can choose my engine! And I'm getting one with more thread in the head! I'm tired of worrying about having another plug blow out while I'm towing or hauling a heavy load.
The 2004 and later new body styles only offered an automatic with a 4.6, and the 4.6 was the only engine available in the 2004 STX,. The VIN does NOT have anything in it which indicates trim line.
From the above post:
Note that there is nothing in the VIN that positively identifies it as a FX4, that's digits 5-7 which only identify it as a Supercab Styleside 4wd.
Thanks ManualF150, it is all wood, and I did it myself. It's all set up on three treated 4 x 6 cross members anchored to the frame. Its cool, I can replace a rear quarter panel for under $30! The whole thing cost me under $400.
A few pics of the bed build.
Been thinking of getting a chassis cab truck (F350) and doing something like that or buy an aluminum stake bed assembly. Not sure yet. Still got lots of warranty left on my '07 F150... and even then, I will probably keep it for a few more years.
One other touch would be to add some towing mirrors. That would complete the "work truck" look.
I added some on my mine, and man, what it does for visibility with and without a trailer! I could never go back to regular mirrors.
I've wondered if this rig was a custom from the factory job. The 5.5 ft bed did strike me as odd. But it was cool looking!
As for the flat bed, I thought about aluminum or even steel, but between the cost and my need to haul firewood for the winter, wood was the best option. No trouble at the dmv getting it changed for registering, and its held up great. Cheep to fix too.
Don't know about trailer mirrors. Narrow roads in the mountains here in Northern California... not having them is easier, and if I really need to see the racks slide out and can be strapped down in the bed to the D rings.
