So I found the neutral safety switch. But my question still stands. How can this be the culprit if when the truck doesnt start, if I bang on the starter with a hammer, the truck starts. Also, if the truck doesnt start I roll it forward about a foot it starts.

Ok, so I tested he neutral theory tonight. The truck wouldnt start, but after I put it in neutral it fired right up. Im still confused though about why it will also start if I bang on the transmission. Anyone know the correct part number for a neutral safety switch / transmission range sensor for an 04 f150 FX4 5.4 liter?

Thank you sir. Im trying to find an aftermarket cheaper alternative, but Im having difficulty. I get several options, like 14 or 20 bold trans, etc.

That part isnt showing that its the correct part for my truck. This is so annoying. Everywhere I look there is no 100% certain part.

Contact Tasca with your VIN, you will get the right OEM part at wholesale.

Yours MIGHT just be slightly out of adjustment.

Ill mess around with it today. There are surprisingly few details about these little guys. How can I tell if its out of adjust/alignment?

Alright, ordered from rock auto. Any tips on getting this lined up and installed correctly?

With vehicle safely secured, place ignition switch to RUN, shift lever to Reverse. Loosen the DTR switch and with the aid of a mirror (or an assistant), adjust the DTR switch so the backup lights are on, then tighten the switch. That will usually fix any misalignment issues.

Well, I replaced the neutral safety switch / transmission range sensor today. That thing was practically welded on their. Not too bad of a job, but I guess we'll see what happens.
