New Exhaust..... Dynomax Bullet

Hello all, I know exhaust questions have been beat to death lately, but I've got a specific question that I really haven't seen answered yet. I bought my truck with a magnaflow muffler welded in the stock location, it's ok, has a nice sound, but is not near loud enough for my taste. It is a single exit. My question comes from replacing the magnaflow with a dynomax bullet. I've seen a lot about running true duals with the 2.5" inlet and outlet 12" bullet, and I've seen one with the 3" inlet and outlet welded in the stock location. My question is has anyone every ran the 3" inlet and outlet 14" bullet with a y pipe behind it split off to dual tips? I'm not really looking for performance gains or anything, I'm really all about sound with my exhaust setups. I am assuming the 2.5" mufflers are a tad bit louder than the 3" due to it being a tad shorter. Any input or pros or cons would be appreciated.

Just noticed there is a 12" version of the 3" inlet and outlet. I would expect it to be very similar to the 2.5".

What year is your truck? 04-05s have 4 cats stock and 06-08s have 2, so the 06-08s will be louder, unless you remove the rear 2 cats on a 04-05. I have a 2004 with a 12" bullet 2.5" in/out and a y pipe to 2 tips. I am happy with it so far, it sounds great and isn't too loud, although I am probably going to remove the 2 rear cats when I get time.

07, so two cats. Is the pipe after the stock y pipe after the manifolds 2.5" or 3"? I always assumed it was 3". I think it would be better to go into a 3" muffler then another y off into 2.5". That's how I had it on my old 05 with a flowmaster.

Fairly sure it's 2.5".

Stock pipe is 2.5". Several people have replaced the stock y pipe with a magnaflow y pipe, then a 3" mid pipe with 2.5" tail pipes.

Ok, guess I assumed wrong. So the exhaust after the factory is 2.5", so I could just weld in a 2.5 inlet and outlet muffler?

Yup, assuming it was the same overall length as the stock muffler. Otherwise you'll have to weld in some extensions.

I think my plan now is to replace the factory y pipe with a 2.5 in to 3 out and put in a 3 inch midpipe into a 3" bullet then another y out to dual tips..... I guess the pipe out to the tips should be 2.5"?

Why go from 2.5 to 3, then back to 2.5? I'd just do a 2.5 SIDO muffler and call it a day. You aren't gaining any power at all (most likely losing some miniscule amount) by going to 3" pipe. You aren't running a big block here.

It would be 2.5 duals. Just some thoughts. I believe I've already got 3" from where the magnaflow has been welded in. I'll have to check though.

I'm having a hard time deciding whether I want to go up to a 3" midpipe and a 3" I/O bullet, or a 2.5" midpipe and a 2.5" I/O bullet. I took pictures of my current set up. Looks like the stock midpipe from the y and then they stepped it up to 3" right before the muffler. I'm probably making a huge deal out of nothing..... It most likely won't make a difference. Below are my current setup pictures.

Very clean under body, amazingly clean!

You can replace your muffler with the Dynomax in 2.5" and run a 2.5" Y pipe for dual tails, no harm there. I went with the 3" from the Y pipe for the deeper tone it gives, and the milder high RPM power range. If I towed a lot I probably would have stuck with 2.5".

Haha you have to love southern trucks. This one was bought new in east TN and spent some time in Alabama before coming back to east TN. That's how all the trucks look down here. Even though we have had a lot of weather the past three weeks. I'll go with 2.5". Towing isn't an everyday thing for me, but I like to be ready and able ha.

My undercarriage looks the same (although probably a little dirtier due to to all of the road grime from the recent snows). No rust belt here.
