Trouble starting

Hi this is my first post. I have a 04 supercrew lariat. When I went to leave work yesterday I got in my truck tried to start it and it just kept trying to turnover. After trying for a little bit (a couple minutes) the battery pretty much died. My coworker jumped it for me and it started right up. Did some running around last night making a couple stops and it started every time. Went out at lunch tested the battery with a tester and it checked out fine. Went to leave work and it wouldn't start. Got a jump again it started. So I figured I better get a battery. Picked one up tonight put it in and it didn't want to start. After trying over and over got it started. My question is, is it my starter? (If they can go that fast no prior issues) or is it something else.

Are you saying it's turning over but not firing, or it's not turning over? If it's not turning over, get the alternator tested. If it's turning over, you either have a fuel or spark problem. Check the FPDM for corrosion.

It turns over just doesn't fire. Went out this morning just turns over won't fire. The alternator is fine. If its that other part why would it start when jumped the other day. Sorry I'm not very mechanically inclined.

As glc said it sounds like it could be your FPDM (fuel pump driver module). To get to it you need to drop your spare tire, and it's mounted on a frame crossmember above the spare. They crack or corrode and fail. To replace the module it's just a couple of bolts and an electrical plug, and they are available through most auto parts stores. If you replace it, make sure the replacement has stand-offs to get it out of contact with the frame.

You ordered a FPDM before dropping yours and inspecting it?

It was only $60. It seems to fit with my issues. I'm only out a little money if it's not the problem.

OP - worst-case, you have now acquired a crucial spare, that should be kept in yer onboard spare parts kit ( everyone has one o' those, right? ). As long as it's NOT a Dorman FPDM - those make excellent Doorstops

I have a stupid question now. Which way do you turn the key to get to the opening for lowering the spare tire. I've tried turning it both ways and it doesn't move.

To the RIGHT.

If neither direction works, yer lock is screwed/seized from lack of maintenance. Conventional wisdom suggests this lock, which sits exposed to the elements, requires seasonal exercising and lubrication - typically done when yall drop the spare to clean it, check pressure, lubricate the winch mechanism and incidentally inspect the FPDM. Four time a year or more.

None of the above occurred, I reckon.

Try some PB Blaster, etc. If yer lucky, it'll free up - if not, gunna cost you fer a new unit....

It's called Preventative ( er, I mean Predictave ) Maintenance fer a reason ...

Ahh, predictive maintenance, I understand now. It sucks getting old.

OP, best of luck in getting it repaired. Be aware that throwing parts at vehicles can be very costly.

Hi.

Very glad you fixed yer issue.

BTW - no one here can read minds, AFAIK - hence no one her knew yer ownership history, until you revealed it. Savvy?

Now that I know it's a 'new-to-you' truck - with (I'm guessing) an unknown maintenance history - this may be of some use to you:

You have an opportunity to bring the truck to a known state, maintenance-wise, perhaps making yer life a bit easier. Up to you. Refer to the maintenance info (nested links within links - a lot to read, sorry) here:

Lastly - in terms of yer $60 FPDM (a Dorman?), this may be of some value if you experience issues with same in the future: https://www.f150online.com/forums/el...-no-start.html

Good luck
MGD
