ticking/poor mpg

I have a 2007 f150 and there is a ticking sound from both sides of the engine kind if like an exhaust leak. I've been told it could be numerous things such as cam phasers, loose plugs, leak ect... I replaced the plugs and boots about a year ago and average about 9-12mpg when it used to be between 16-19. I'm looking for ideas on what could be causing both issues.
