My experience with the dreaded FPDM

My experience with this dang FPDM was mainly intermediate no start. Truck would crank over very strong, but would not fire. Some times it would take 2 or 3 times to start the truck. Also for the last week I have been monitoring my Fuel pressure at the rail with my Edge. No matter what I did the Fuel pressure never went above 39 psi.

Well I changed the FPDM tonight along with my fuel filter.
Took the truck for a drive after changing everything out.. First thing I noticed was the fuel pressure actually increased when the truck cranked up up to about 55 or so psi. (didn't catch it right away). Upon acceleration the fuel pressure would adjust accordingly. Increasing ever so slightly the closer I got to WOT. Truck actually seems to pull harder now.

All and all for about a half hour or so of work everything seems back to normal.

Here is the old FPDM compared to the new one

And the small crack allowing moisture into the FPDM

I've wondered about replacing mine too. It's fine 99% of the time, but it has taken two cranks a few times intermittently in the last few months. Seems like a good thing to replace and I know it's gonna start giving me problems eventually. Not too pricey or hard to install either (unless you say otherwise after having just done it haha).

Is that a Dorman tag on the new one?

Did you suspend it up off of the cross member or does the new one have the hardware for that? (or is it even necessary on the new part)

The Dorman FPDM I bought came with the hardware to lift it off the crossmember.

Very easy to replace Kmac. It took me more time to crawl out from under my truck to get a socket twice and the part, than to change it.

It does come with two different mounting styles. The one that is used for the crossmember has a rubber cushion spacer to lift it about a half inch from the crossmember.

Edit: tools needed, 8mm and 12mm socket.. That's it

Even if you don't replace it... BUY ONE AND PUT IT IN YOUR GLOVEBOX

I used to have a 2004. Before all the dormans were available the OEM ones were backordered for months.
So I took my FPDM off, cleaned it, greased it, and re-installed with DIY stand-off bolts/washers.

Then when the Dorman came out I ordered one but never got around to installing it.

But I did keep it in my truck
(with a few zipties). Just in case it ever died when I was away from home. All I would have to do is slide under the truck, plug in the new one, and ziptie it to the axle till I get home and can properly install it.

Turns out I never needed it, so after trading in my truck I sold it for like 20 bucks.
But I'm still glad I had one.

Just my friendly advice!

That's good, I may swap it out during the summer just to get it done.

I cleaned mine up, lubed it and lifted it up off the cross member. I should probably buy a Dorman spare, though.

Here in Texas, this is all you should need to do, Kmac.

According to MGDFan, the Dorman FPDM's are dropping like flies - if you install one I'd recommend having a spare to use while waiting for the warranty replacement.

I heard him say that, but who specifically has had that issue?

Really? The last few threads i read everyone was recommending the Dorman.
Guess I'll buy the other one rockauto has. Its a little more expensive (and by little i been double the price) and doesn't come with the hardware. But don't need the hardware now that i have it from the Dorman kit.

I wouldn't really sweat it - the Dorman does have a lifetime warranty.
