Just bought a new-to-me 2004 FX4 SC .. what to do to it maintenance-wise?

Hi all. First post. Yes, I know I should have done an introduction post as my first, but there's not much to tell. Just moved to Utahr, sold my boring Japanese commuter, and got me a second-hand F150. Pretty good shape, although it needs a new rear bumper (jeez, those are pricey!).

Anyway, it's a 5.4 Triton. Aside from the oil and filter change, air filter swap, and maybe fuel filter, is there anything else I should do to this beast to get a good baseline?

And who are preferred online vendors for parts and accessories? I know LMC, but if I want a solid set of nerf bars (short wife), where's the place?

Thanks in advance. Been scouring the boards and this looks like a great group!

How many miles are on it?

Use Motorcraft 5w20 oil and a Motorcraft filter - both available at Walmart quite cheap. Might as well use a Motorcraft air filter too. Stay AWAY from Fram filters.

Rockauto.com is a good parts source, if you need a dealer-only item, try tascaparts.com.

Try a junkyard for a bumper.

Hi & Welcome!

The info presented here should help you get started - there is a lot to address to ensure reliability on a used truck with little/no maintenance history:

Craigslist usually has bumpers pop up. Rockauto has some as well. Most of the cost is going to be in paint.

180K on the truck. Which is about what the selection is this market averages. People hold on to their trucks in this state!

I've been using the K&N oil and air filters for a while; never even really thought about the Motorcraft route. Might try that, thanks.

And thanks for that link, MGD!

Craigslist is a wasteland in my area. There's a local newspaper online classifieds section that has some activity, but nothing like I'd like to see, especially not in car parts. Not sure what salvage yards have up this way, either. As weather is getting better, I'll explore.

Thanks again for the welcomes. And if you're ever in Utahr, good luck finding a decent cigar shop!

I sometimes forget that my Craigslist has all of Houston and its surrounding areas fueling it, so I have a much wider selection and a lot of junk yards.

I've been to Utah the last two year for skiing, but didn't look for a cigar shop! Sundance and Park City are great places though.

Change the engine coolant.
Drain and refill the transfer case.
Change the differential lube both ends.
Change the transmission fluid.
Change the power steering fluid.
Check the brake pads and flush the brake lines with fresh fluid.
Change the spark plugs!!!

Thanks, Roadie! And I know about those spark plug idiosyncrasies thanks to this site, too.

K&N oil filters are excellent but 3x the cost of a MC. The air filters don't filter as well as a standard paper filter and the oil can foul the MAF. If you want a 100k cleanable air filter, get an Amsoil, it's a dry nanofilter.

Also, you should check the ball joints, tie rod ends, and all of the suspension/steering stuff under the front end.

Thanks! Yeah, the Fuel Pump Driver Module ... already have one in my Amazon cart.

Sounds like it's just a matter of time for those ...
