Violent Steering Wheel Vibration

Drove my truck today in 4-wheel high through a blizzard for about 35 miles in deep snow. I never drove faster than 45mph and the truck was fine. Driving home from the store I got onto the plowed expressway and when I got up to 60mph the steering wheel vibrated like nothing I have ever experienced before. At 70mph it was hard to stay in my lane. I felt like I had no control. It did this really bad for about 20 miles. The last 10 miles it was very faint. Through town at about 25mph it was fine. Had to put it in 4x4 to get into my driveway and it worked fine. Checked under the truck and front-end and cannot find anything broken or wrong with it. Any ideas? Steering rack?

Snow and ice packed in behind the front wheels, throwing them out of balance.

That thought crossed my mind too, but I've driven through a lot of snow in my life and never experienced anything like that. I'm going to drive it tomorrow and if it doesn't do it then that must be the problem. Thank you

Can you get your head under there to look at the backside of the front wheels?

That's what I was thinking. I had the same thing happen a few months ago, but with mud. Steering wheel was shaking at 50mph+, cleaned the mud off and it stopped shaking.

It was frozen slush. I cleaned it all out and it drives like new. Thanks guys!!!

However, one of my catalytic converters started rattling today on the way home from work. I had the exact same problem a year ago. Now my millage is really going to take a hit. The truck is going in next week so it can be determined which one it is. Any advise on who makes the best aftermarket converters? After 8 years/80,000 miles they are not free anymore.
