Trouble filling fuel tank.

When filling my 2004(new body) the fuel nozzle will kick-off every few seconds. I have to hold the fuel handle lever about 1/4 of the way open to fill the tank, which takes forever with a 30 gallon tank.

Is there an updated filler neck for these trucks?? The filler necks are so tiny. It's no wonder they can't handle full flow from the nozzle.

I'll get some picstomorrow.

I think it depends on the gas station your at too, some in my area I'll have to hold it the whole time and others it'll fill fine.

My truck never did this until I had a fuel pump related issue ( not a replacement pump, but whatever reads the gas needle, was replaced for $300 ), ever since my truck will do this once or twice per fill up. I live with it as I don't DD the truck anymore.

agree that it depends on the station. youre also not supposed to go full flow. i have the 30 gal tank as well and always fill on the slowest notch

Did someone try to steal some gas and leave the siphon hose behind? That's what happened to my kid's Bronco, he had to fill it with an eye dropper til he got the "extra" hose out.

There must be a problem with your filler tube. I've never had this problem with either my '04 or '05.

"topping off" can sometimes cause the vent hose on the filler to hold gas or not let a bent work correctly....

check the vent hose for low spots that could hold gas also...make sure its not kinked or pinched also....

as others have stated it could be the gas station also....

I wouldn't accept that answer as I have proven that full blast works on these trucks. Only until mine got worked on did it do this a few times. But that filler neck is not cheap to replace. I'm also not patient enough for the slowest filling setting.

I never noticed it with my '04, or my '07, until the dealer replaced the sending unit on my fuel pump on the '07. But as I mentioned it does it only once or twice during the fill up.

there are threads on here and other forums about ways to save gas. pumping at full flow aerates the gas more, so you are paying for more air and less gas. Same idea as buying gas in the morning when it is colder and more dense verses in the afternoon when it is warmer and expanded.

What I am saying is not specific to f150s or even fords. just a general way to save gas as i explained above

I set mine on lowest setting always now, had a few instances of "gas gushing back" on some cars many years ago on high speed. 1st notch is always fine.

The previous '04 I had did not have an issue here. But my current truck has to be filled at a rate slower than the first notch on fuel nozzle.

I do recall the filler neck on my previous truck was larger diameter and it had a build date of 7 months BEFORE the current truck I own. IDK. Just wondering what others have noticed with theirs.

Aerates at the nozzle...Not at the pump/metering device,. And most gas stations have underground tanks that should not be affected by the temperature change.

The air tube must have come disconnected or kinked or they bent the filler tube and it needs to be turned back to its comfort spot. I would make the shop you took it to fix it as obviously you didn't want to drop the tank the first time..
hope this helps

I always fill my '04 up on the fastest notch and haven't ever had this problem. And when it does kick-off, its slap full and will spill out if I try to put any more in.
