As 'Sooner Truck' said, there is nothing wrong with 10W-30--if the engine was designed for it. The 5.4 requires the thinner oil so that it can get to the chain adjusters and the VCT system quicker. This could be a contributing factor with the 'rattling' you have on start-up...this combined with a quality filter (MC or better). Best thing is the 5W-20 MC blend for the 5.4. Myself I use Amsoil 5W-20 and change at least every 5000 mi or 1 year MAX. It's overkill I know, but my truck sits a lot and I usually change based on time more than mileage. I have had no problems with my 5.4 at all. A lot depends on driving style also, but best bet is, stay with the oil weight based on what is recommended from the manufacturer.

I use 10w 30 mc over the colder month, plan to switch back when it gets warmer. Also I replaced the burned out fuses today and now my 4wd works great!

Why would you use a thicker oil in the cold months? If using different viscosity oil between summer and winter, Which is unnecessary, it should be the other way around. It is no wonder you have valve clatter at startup. Just use the 5w20 at all times.
