2004 4.6 2v Spark Plug Change DONE!

So I have read a lot about this subject and how much it sucks to change plugs on these trucks. Well just in case you found this thread by accident, I have some words of encouragement: It ain't that bad.

These 2v trucks like mine don't use those fancy plugs that break off in the head in 5 different places. They use the old fashioned plugs you are used to.

And to save you the trouble, they are Motorcraft SP-493. I got them at a local store for $3.49 a piece.

So if you have a truck like mine, take your time, inspect your boots, blow out the round the existing spark plug before removing, and use dielectric grease, and you'll be done in a couple hours.

Hope this help I'd you're feeling overwhelmed. I know I was, but you CAN do it yourself!

Now get to work!

Don't recall anyone ever saying the 4.6L 2V were anything out of the ordinary. Boring day for you maybe?

Nope, the 2v 4.6 is a piece of cake. It was the 5.4 on the '04-'08s that was the possible headache. No issues with the 4.6 except a lil underpowered. And, hey, I've posted at 3 in the morning before lol

Maybe you should make an appointment with your eye doc. My post clearly says 1:08 AM. I'm never on the Net in the daytime (Al invented it and he won't let me on unless it's dark) and am usually on till 2:00 AM or so. I still have a pretty good memory and can't remember the last time I was bored, maybe 1967.... nah, I thought about being bored for a few seconds but didn't like the idea so dropped it. Now go do a write-up on changing the plugs in your Model A, almost as interesting as changing 'em in a 4.6 2V.

Wonderful! You, sir, where the target audience of this post.

I too was discouraged to even try. I heard how hard the 5.4 was but never saw anything about the 4.6. I always assumed they were the same.

So go for it !

You guys with 4.6's and 2 valve 5.4's need to use a torque wrench and torque the plugs to 28 ft/lb.

Going to do my plugs this weekend, what's the proper torque specs? I want to avoid the possible spark plug blow out issue.

The spark plug blow out issue was fixed with an engineering change in about 2001. The correct torque spec for a 2 valve motors is in GLC's post directly above yours.

Nope - not till late 03. That's when they went from 4 thread heads to 8 thread heads. I know at least 1 person with a early 2004 4.6 new body style that has the OLD heads. To be safe, Motorcraft plugs, no antiseize, and 28 ft/lb.
