Tranny quit today

If it ain't for bad luck I wouldn't have any. Up in North Dakota working in the oil fields so I can get out of debt and I have to drive 60 miles to grocery. On the way back I was cruising at 69 MPG when the truck violently shudders a cpl times. Tranny quit pulling so I take it out of gear and coast for a while, put it back in gear and nothing. Put it in 2nd and it pulls a little bit. All the while I notice the tranny temp is rising fast ( I have an edge and I have a tranny temp gauge). Made it 2 miles to a gas station and checked the dipstick and its brown and smells like burnt brakes.
So now the nearest dealer is 70 miles away and I'm afraid this is gonne cost me some major bucks. Anyone know what a factory rebuild cost?
Last year I replaced & flushed the fluid and filter, and I just got back from driving to and from Alaska so I keep notice of all fluid levelsand everything was fine as of yesterday.

Yeah I figured about 3K from dealer, just have heard horror stories from guys that went to some independent shops. Since I'm from out of state its not like I can bring it back easily if it goes out again 6 months down the road.
Everything closes down for the weekend up here so I'll have to wait till Monday and maybe have it towed to a dealer. There are tons of pickups up here so I'll also start calling salvage yards too.

Im almost sure if they put a new one in you get like 3yr 100k miles on new tranny, that right there is worth it as far as having the ford dealership do it

I had the same experience a few weeks ago. A brand new trans from Ford was $2500, 3 year unlimited mileage warranty.

My tranny went out at 95k. Ordered one from Nordstroms Automotive in South Dakota for $950 with 50k on it. Put it in myself.

P.S. I'm from Utah, and am also here in North Dakota.

Yeah I checked out nordstrom's. They want $600 for a tranny with 122K on it. Might last forever or might go out in 10K.

Those of who who got new ones from dealer, were they actually NEW or factory rebuilts?

I think I need to watch this thread for a couple reasons.

How you like living in North Dakota otherwise? I drove through it in 2003 and it seemed like the end of the world. Women with beards, no trees and the weather.. if it is wasn't 100 degrees it was 100 below with the chill factor.

There are no *NEW* transmissions - they are Ford-contracted remans.

My 98 Expedition's 4R100 Transmission went @ 147,000 Went with the Ford Reman Part about $2100 or So + Replaced the Raditor & Hoses + The External Cooler Total Cost was around $3400,The Expedition is My Wifes & Still looks like new so we decided to keep it rather than try to go the cheap route,3 year Unlimited Milage Warranty through Ford on the Transmission.

Luck ain't so bad after all ..... there was a few places on that trip to and from Alaska where you would have been in more dire straigts!

Money tight, I'ld go with that $600 deal and have a tranny man pull the pan and give her a look over and take it easy on it./
Money not tight ... then I'ld go either Ford or Jasper Reman Tranny. Jasper is nationwide too .... even have one up the road in a little burg that's 1/4 mile long 24435.
