Trying to Save Money on Gas

I know that Saving money on Gas and F150 doesn't go hand in hand like, beer and fishing or beer and bowling.

I have a 2004 F150 with the 4.6, it's customer, tuned, e-fans, pullies, and air intake. These mods were put on a long time ago say when the truck hit 55k miles or so. Right now, I have 177k miles on it and just trying to save money on gas while trying to make this truck last to 200k.

I have the ability to buy gas at $1.70 - $2.00 per gallon for 87, but not on a consistent basis.

I was wondering what your thoughts are on if I get one of those Eagle metal cans and use it to fill up 5 gallons so that I can use that as a reserve tank to put gas bought at $1.7-$2 versus paying the full price? Any safety thoughts or issues I should think of?

I would carry the gerry can of gas in the bed of my truck under a tonneau cover.

5 gallon gerry cans seems like a bad idea, you should be using 55 gallon drums and storing them at your house!

^ that's what I would be doing lol

So what if it dropped to 3/4 of a tank before you got home? 1/4 of the 27 gallon tank is only ~6.8 gallons, do you could do that almost 8 times before emptying one drum.

You can buy a Driver Fuel Pump Module from LMCTruck.com, this improves gas mileage. you could get a E-Fan to improve MPG, this gives you 17 extra hp

Look into some of the tanks that Farmers use... they sit in your bed like a built-in toolbox and have a hand pump built into them.

I'm not sure what sizes they make - maybe one would fit under your cover?

The only other concern is the EPA - I've heard farmers say that they cannot store as much fuel in tanks at their home now due to rules about containing the fuel ???? This is second-hand knowledge so I'm not sure about it or the details.

You might want to change the thread title to "Fuel Storage methods" or something like that....

He mentioned that he already has them. I'd say that the diesel tool box in the bed is about the only way to get any appreciable amount of fuel, but then you have to worry about dragging around several hundred pounds of fuel/tool box in the bed, which decreases fuel economy. You also have to worry about people stealing the gas in that toolbox which is extremely easy when you have a built-on pump to transfer it. Also, hand cranking 25 gallons of fuel isn't fun, so you might look at an electric pump.

How does that improve mileage? And where are you getting 17hp from? You'd be lucky to see 3-4hp gains with efans

The transfer tank is out of the question, too expensive.

I'm thinking about buying one or two of these:

Amazon Amazon

and fill them and my truck up with gas at my discounted rate. Once I drive the trunk enough where the fuel level can accommodate the extra cans of gas, I'll pour it into the truck.

Any safety thoughts?
