Towing a 5th wheel camper...?

Got in touch with the previous owner of my truck, and asked what was the deal with the mirrors. As to my suspecion they were replaced with non-poiwer towing mirrors. Then he informed me he used to tow a 28' 5th wheel camper (5th wheel plate has since been removed, bedliner installed by dealer before i bought it).

Doesnt that seem a bit large to tow with a regular F150? Other good news is he never had an mechanical issues/problems/failures, always kept it serviced and no accidents (not even a parking lot dinger).

Also since i now know what he used it for, are there any areas i should look into for any excellerated wear? Such as service the trans or diffs? Truck has almost 36,000 on it (he had a work truck for his primary vehicle).

Yeah, that's too much for a 1/2 ton truck.

By the way, your sig is probably incorrect - they never put the 4R100 in a 06 that I'm aware of, you probably have a 4R75.

I would certainly get a complete tranny fluid exchange. Diffs should be okay.

It all depends on the weight of the 5th wheel. They do make long 1/2 ton towable 5th wheels. I tow a 25 ft 5th wheel and it handles it just fine. Just would do regular service on truck.

When you tow heavy, the trans fluid should be exchanged every 30k. Ask the PO if he ever had it done.

agree with that. a guy at work just bought a similar camper he has been pulling it with his 1500 chevy apparently he was told they are making them to be pulled with half ton trucks. I have pulled a aluminum stock trailer with my truck with 3 horses and a weekends worth of beer, food and tack. I haven't had any issues with it at all

thanks fellas, interesting to note i never heard of that before. The PO said it handled the camper just fine and he never did anything stupid while towing. Seemed to be an honest guy (also a Ford man) so ill take his word on it.

As for the full trans fluid exchange is that a dealer only thing or can i do it at home? i've done similiar with two 5 gal buckets (disconnected the trans/rad cooler, ran the output into a bucket for old fluid and a clean bucket filled with approx the amount of fluid on the inlet). Actually i've done quit a bit (unemployed auto n diesel tech), but for some reason this newer truck gives me the hebe gebes, probably cuz its the only nice thing i own n its still like new.

Works with a 4R75 too.
