Been through a couple of ice storms and a couple of snow storms with 18"-24" of snow plus drifts. I've not been stuck in any of it with a 2WD truck and a half dozen sand bags in the bed. I've seen 4x4 stuck in ditches in those same conditions. If you know how to drive in it, and keep yourself out of situations that will make things difficult, you won't usually need a 4x4. The 4x4 is nice, and makes things easier, but 90% of those with 4x4's rarely put the vehicle in places that REQUIRE 4x4. That being said, I'm not big on mudding, so I wouldn't be testing out my truck's capabilities in that fashion. If I were doing the mudding, I'd go grab a beater 4x4 truck/bronco and have at it.

That would be a sight to see a 2wd truck going through 20+ inches of snow.

I also drove a 87 Taurus wagon through 21 inches of snow several years back in the Chicago area. It didn't even have winter tires, just all-season highway tires.

It was slow-going and required keeping the momentum going in places, but as long as I was moving it was fine, lol. When the front tires start plowing, it made things difficult. 4X4 would have been nice, but still not necessary.

Yea I bet you were on edge around every turn or hill or stop for that matter. Ive seen cars with snow tires do pretty well in the snow but at 20 inches your bumper turns into a plow. Guess it depends on the type of snow and whats underneath the snow even then ive been almost stuck in 4wd in culdesacs but putting weight in the rear and low tire pressure help alot. We got that much snow here in Maryland a couple years ago and there would of been no way I would have gotten to some of the places I went without 4wd. As for offroading Im sure its possible to go in 2wd and get through alot but even a stick or a rock will stop 2wd in its tracks. And the ground underneath the mud would have to be hard otherwise I just dont see it happening. Good times though.

Climbed rocky hills, skipped across mud to where I know I didnt reach the bottem, and the only "stick" that stopped me was a 2ft wide log...

Ok contrary to what I said we went out agian a couple nights ago and got STUCKKK. Had my buddie driving and he wasnt paying atention and drove into the side of 4ft deep ruts and had the rear wheels in the air! A determend nissan eventualy snatched me out by itself, quite a sight. Up until then tho I was going through some stuff that some of the 4x4s didnt want to hit. Pritty good night up until then lol still need to go out during the day so I can take pics

I've done it short distances through drifts with a 2WD state police car on many occasions, open diffs, loaded trunk (gear) and a set of chains. I've had to stop afterwards and clear the grille. In Dec 2009 18-20 weekend, big big snow here .... morning after I cleared around the police car which was parked where iI got it off the road the night before up in my drive with snow blower, put chains on, looked like road had been scraped in the night .... I puled out and started up the roadway to work another 16 hour day .... snow was only about 12" deep until I got up to neighbors driveway .... it was just where he had cleared some to feed cattle. I hit the deep stuff above his driveway, plowed through 18-20" snow at 30mph in 2nd for a good 100 yds to the main road. Wipers going wide open, snow blowing over hood .... took a few minutes to clear that from grille.

In 1979 we had a deep snow in February on Sunday while I was in the basic academy, I was in Clifton Forge visiting my GF (now wife) and academy was 140 miles away, I had to get there by 10PM. I left CF about 4PM, in my '67 Chevelle Super Sport (it did have 4 spd and 3.55 Posi and I had a set of 15" Firestone Town and Country Snows on it with tungsten studds that I had on spare wheels on Saturday at Lynchburg at my home along with some skinnys up frt .... Rallys and fattys in basement .... it also had 1970 model Chevelle SW coils frt and rear so it set level, but somewhat raised.). I had to go to pee bad down east of Charlottesville and so off an exit I went .... exit hadn't been cleaned .... that snow must have been 2-1/2 feet deep where it was piled up and then all the way up the ramp, no tracks, good 12-18" deep steady all the way up that ramp and down the other side (nothing up that exit, side road hadn't been touched) .

I can see it being possible with chains and alot of wieght in the bed. Would still depend on conditions. Get 4x4 if you like to offroad or live in a place that gets regular heavy snow storms.

Later I repainted it and swapped out that little 396, dropped in 454 with Tri Power, kept AC.

Most of the fun is had in 2wd! haha man the fun you can have on a 2wd 4wheeler knowin ur tryin not to get stuck always on the edge! Then usually if you do it can pull it out by yourself, if your 4wd and stuck pretty much know it requires someone else around to get you out tho.. it doesnt matter it isnt a car so who cares if its 2wd 4wd w/e
