Jumping A/C Compressor

Hey guys, A/C on '07 quit pumping out cold air. Compressor doesn't run when you turn on the A/C. Was going to try and add a can of R-134, but the compressor has to be running to get it to take, but the compressor won't run if it's already low.

I had heard there was a way to jumper the compressor for this very scenario. Any tips on how or where to go from here?

Mine stopped working when I installed my lariat cluster into my xlt. Now this is just for a quick fix and I am no responsible for any damage that happens as a result of my tips.

First find the harness going to the compressor. Expose the wires, 1 black and 1 white. Run the black to a ground. Run the white to a relay w/ a toggle switch setup so you can engage and disengage the clutch as needed. Again, this is a temporary fix. More than likely you'll need to go to Ford and have them flash your truck to read the AC again.

You're problem isn't the compressor but the clutch not engaging. When you put the AC on, you don't hear the click of the clutch engaging do you? following the steps I laid out will allow you to jump the clutch.

I think the other method you are thinking of is where you jump the high side, right?

That's what/why I'm asking. I don't know what to jump, but I've seen bits and pieces to know I don't want/need to do what you're describing. I'm sure as heck not trying to install a switch or relay to force start the compressor. Mines not associated with a mod like yours. The assumption at this point is just as I originally stated…assuming the compressor isn't starting because the 134 is low; which is completely normal. I want to jump whatever it is you jumper wire to get the compressor going so you can add/charge the 134.

But yes, you are correct. When you turn on the A/C, nothing happens.

It could be the field coil on the compressor.

But, the 04-08's are notorious for the blend door actuators going out. Basically the temp is on cold, but hot air is coming out.

You shouldn't need to run the A/C compressor. IF it is only low on 134A, simply hook the can up and open the valve (remember to have the can upright so that it isn't feeding straight liquid in), when it gets enough pressure, it will automatically start the compressor. This is IF it is simply low on 134A. I STRONGLY advise using a set of guages so that you KNOW if it is simply low on 134A or some other problem before you go "dumping" it in. Way too many guys "assume" they are low because the A/C quits working and then they end up with a seriously overcharged system. I used to use a simple guage that LOOKED like a tire pressure guage, although it was for A/C. On a crashed car I would simply "check the pressure" to make sure the system was up BEFORE the accident, in the case of NO damage or leaks to the A/C system. The "static prtessure" was "approximately" equal to the outside air temp. Remember, I did say "static" and "approximately". If it was 20 or 30 lbs. less, I KNEW it was "down" before the crash. (this was with FREON, the guage I had wouldn't fit on a 134A fitting).

^^ This. If you are down on refrigerant, there is still a vacuum in the system that will pull another can in. When the pressure is raised some, the pressure cycle switch will allow the compressor to operate. Check it first and add a can. Its that easy.

code...thanks for the awesome reply!! Must be something else going on. (BTW...I'm relaying info for my dad) Here's what I know...

-The compressor will piggy and run, but still doesn't blow cold air
-Hooking up a can of stuff will not make the compressor turn on (glad you pointed out that it should)
-With the compressor jumpered and running and the can hooked up, it still would not take any from the can

It would be best for your dad to take it to a pro. Some things you just shouldn't work on without the proper tools, equipment, and knowledge. If it won't take a can of refrigerant, you have reached that point.

Yep...and that's exactly what he ended up doing. Waiting on a verdict, but it wasn't a simple fix. Had to replace the compressor; don't know why or what they found yet.
