Cruise Control Quit Working

I've got a 2004 F-150 and lately I’ve been having some problems with the cruise control shutting off. Here’s the problem...if I try to use my cruise control within about 5 minutes of cranking the truck in the morning it will work fine, turn it on, increase and decrease speed and turn it off. After a couple minutes if I cut it off it will not turn back on. No matter how long I drive it will never come back on. I took it to the dealer and the steering wheel switches and everything electrical came back fine and they said it worked because when they drove it worked. I replaced the 3rd brake light because it was burnt out but still doesn’t work.

If anybody has had any problems similar to this or has any other suggestions to try please let me know.

Thanks

My Taurus did something similar to this before I got rid of it. I had to pull the brake pedal back with my foot to get the cruise working again. I'm thinking the pedal was just barely touching the switch. I didn't care enough to re adjust it.

If you've done the third brake light then check the brake pedal switch.......might even be your shifter selector is loose also.....

There is a brake fluid pressure switch that can stick and cause the cruise to stop working. It is a backup system that will open the circuit if none of the other switches cancel the cruise. I had it fail on an 08 Ford van. Sometimes the cruise would work & sometimes it wouldn't. Ford can test it with their fancy laptop & software, and if it is that pressure switch, it is about a 5 minute fix.

this may sound like a stupid question, but on another post someone mentioned having an issue with his clockspring potentially causing his cruise not to work properly. my cruise also does not work (just purchased 04 F150) and coincidentally found out that it needed to have the clockspring/airbag recall done. could this be related to my cruise not working?

forgive the newb

thanks!

Check to see if your 3rd brake light is burnt out. If it is that will cause the cruise not to work.

thanks for the tip. I did check and all is working as it should (unfortunately) would have been nice to have a quick fix. the search continues. I'll check the brake switch next

most likely its your shift interlock switch, is this 2004 truck you have have floor mounted shifter? cause if it does then its most likely the shift interlock, same thing happened on my dads 2004 fx4 and you can take the top shifter cover off, there will be a black box connected to the shifter, there is a override switch on the side of it and all if did was glue a piece of plastic in there to permanently overide it and it worked, this saved about 260$ for a brand new shift interlock switch

hmmm, interesting. if you mean center console-mounted shifter (a la Lariat) as opposed to column mount, you are right. that is what I have. now when you say top shifter cover, do you mean the chrome cover on top of the lever, or the cover surrounding the shifter on the console? sorry if it sounds a little silly, but I'm new to the F150s so forgive the possibly banal questions

thanks!

It's the cover surrounding the shifter. Open the center console and you'll see an "indent". Stick a screw driver in it and pry it up to pop it off.

yes its the cover surrounding the shifter, take that off, it pops off, you will see a black box of the left side(driver side) of the shifter and thats where you will see the override switch on the side, shove something in there to permanently push it down, drive around and see if your cruise control works if it does then glue that thing in there that you shoved in there and it all should be fine

thanks for the tips, gentlemen!

I also checked my brake pedal on the way to work this morning (pulled it up with my foot) and tried the cruise, and voila, it worked. so I know that's an area I need to address. I'll check the shifter as you mentioned, to be sure that there isn't an issue with it

thanks again!
