Fuel mileage..
Fuel mileage..
I know this isn't a pleasant topic but I'd like to get some insight. Let me start off with what kind of fuel mileage are you fellas gettin? I'm gettin 11.5-12.5 mpg
Second, let's talk bout the trucks. I have a 2004 Scab 5.4 3V. 20" wheels with 33's, true Duals (with cats), Gotts mod intake, diablo pretador with stock 87 tune.
Now time for some insight from you guys. I know I have a cam phaser problem and my question to y'all is fixing this problem gonna help out my fuel mileage?
Also with having no mufflers on my exhaust setup could that be a effect on mileage?
I drive 85% highway driving with 60+ mph. And 12 mph just isn't cutting it. Any insight would be appreciate guys

That is pretty low mileage for all you have done. The stock tires are 32" so unless you're 33's are wider and/or a mud tire I don't think you should be taking that big of a hit.
I get anywhere from 15-17 around town and 19 on the highway.

Sounds really bad, Im still getting 15+ on perf tune. 16 on tow tune. In my opinion the lack of back pressure is probably not helping. I would say get custom tunes or some mufflers. My efan and Underdrive pulleys really helped my mpgs.
How many miles on your rig? Have you changed the plugs, and driveline fluids? That mileage is tryin to tell you somethin.

See I've always heard back pressure is a myth. But I'm no exhaust guru. If mufflers are a valid way to improve fuel mileage, which mufflers would give me the best improvement but still keep the same sound?
But I just turned over 154,000. I've put 21,000 miles on it since last august. Even with stocks I still managed 15 in a real good day. So far no plug change but all the engine fluid have been changed (antifreeze, power steering, and transmission)

also depends on your definition of city driving. my drive to campus is about 6 minutes of hills, stop lights, stop signs and pedestrian crossings, and i get like 12 mpg. where at home my drive to work is like 10 minutes, but its some stoplights and 45 mph limits. there i get like 14-15.
i know my truck is pretty straight because i get 16+ on the highway

I'll give you my opinion to the best of my knowledge. If you get the extra money.. change your cam phasers, I had mine recently replaced and it gave me peace at mind. No more ticking sound, just quietness. As for the exhaust, the better the air flow the better the gas milage. (Same goes for the intake) On another note I will never EVER use a programmer ever again. I went through my first transmission ever in a vehicle with an Edge CTS programmer. I DO NOT RECCOMEND ANY EDGE PRODUCTS TO ANYONE. $700.00 DOWN THE DRAIN.(Not to mention the $2400.00 rebuild of my transmission) The kind of gas you are using doesn't really affect the gas milage either, just preformance from the engine. And last but not least the tires do not help either. Better gas milage depends on driving habits, properly inflated tires, proper sized tires, and unrestricted air flow in every category. Hopefully this helped.
Thats the biggest problem you have going for you right now. They are not a smooth tire at all and take a ton of power to keep rolling.
Get the cam phaser fixed, change plugs. Other things like air and fuel filters, TB and MAF cleaning...just get everything back to running, turning and sliding how it should.
If you aren't in mud very often, change to a different tire if you want to save fuel. I have 265/70-17 Cooper Discoverer ATRs, not super aggressive looking but get the job done time and time again. I did not have much of a mileage hit either when I put them on from my little stock highway tires, 235/70-17.
Also, I've had custom tuning for nearly as long as I've owned the vehicle. If you drive responsibly the increase in performance will probably give you a slight mileage boost...but that is not guaranteed because of the myriad of factors involved.

how do you know the Edge caused your tranny to take a dump? Ive put 50k miles on my truck with the edge programmer(truck has 128,000) and the tranny is still good as new. There are alot of other members here that has put more miles than i have on the edge and havent had any problems.
