Did airbag recall, said tranny/transfercase seal leaking

I had my truck at the dealer today to get the airbag recall done. When they called to tell me that it was done and able to be picked up the service writer told me I had an issue that I may want taken care of. She then goes on to tell me that service tech said the seals between the tranny and transfer case were leaking. And that the tranny was leaking fluid into the T-case, which made the tranny low on fluid and she said the T-case had too much. She then goes on to say that this is a very common problem with the 04-08 F150's and that it would only cost me $436 to fix it.

So that brings me to my question: Is there a "common problem" with the seals on the tranny and T-case leaking that would cause the problem that they told me about? Or are they full of sh__? (like I was thinking right away)

Not sure if it's a common problem or not. Never heard of it happening to anyone before.

I don't know about that exact problem, but my old '04 leaked in the exact same area.

The transfer case on my '05 also appears to have a leak. I'll know more once I get under there this weekend!

it may be common but it does not seem to be as common as other problems (cam phasers, spark plugs, etc)

another good reason to have a 2WD

My transfercase seal started to leak on my 06 5.4 4x4 notice that it was getting onto the drive shaft then spraying it all over the underbody. I caught it before warrenty was up and the dealership took care of it.

If the truck is in warranty, I'ld schedule the repair ASAP.

If the truck is NOT in warranty, I'ld watch my transmission level and watch underneath for signs of leakage. I'ld make a habit of checking the trans fluid and TC fluid once a month or every couple hundred miles untill I had an idea as to how much is seaping how fast ...
... then I might fix it if BAD ...
... or I might just check and add to trans at intervals and maybe pull some from TC with suction pump occasionally if NOT BAD.

Right now, with a 2004, neither you nor FORD knows how long it's been seeping or how bad.

That's funny, I took my truck in for a transmission oil leak and they did the recall with out me asking.

Although, not so funny that you have problems...

I just checked the tranny fluid last week, after putting over 700 miles on towing out camper around the last part of the summer. The fluid level is right where it was when I checked it after the dealership told me about this "problem". There is still no fluid on the floor, or leaking out of the T-case tail shaft. I will be keeping an eye on it, but I am still thinking that the dealership was full of ____.

It would have to leak out of the trans seal then leak through the transfercase seal to get into the transfercase. Yea not likely. My question would be how did they find this problem under the truck when performing an airbag recall? lol. work must be slow there....

Thats exactly what I was thinking! Since the tranny and T-case are 2 independent units and not a shared system in any way, the odds of 2 seals failing and never seeing even a single drop of fluid on the floor are very very unlikely. I probably have better odds of winning the lottery.

Most people would just take the dealerships word that there was a problem and tell them to go ahead and fix it. But since I have done most of my own wrenching or been helping my dad ever since I can remember, I know slightly more than the average customer that the dealership deals with.

the seals between the tranny and transfer case were leaking. And that the tranny was leaking fluid into the T-case, which made the tranny low on fluid and she said the T-case had too much.
As said, this is a somewhat common problem. The dealership is not jacking with you.

Then it shouldn't be a big deal for you to drop the transfer case and fix it.
