O2 Sensors - Bank 1 and Bank 2

I have a 2004 5.4L with 123000 miles.

I occasionally connect my reader to the computer to see how it is doing and if it is popping any codes. The last time, I noticed that the B1S2 and B2S2 oxygen sensors were not changing their readings and the O2 light on the main screen of my reader was blinking.

I know that this means that I need to replace those O2 sensors, but I can't find anything that tells me which is sensors these are. Google searches come up with very widely different answers.

So which is Bank 1 and Bank 2?
And
Which is Sensor 1 and Sensor 2 on those banks?

Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Gary

Bank one sensors are the front o2s, bank 2 are the rear ones. Sensor 1 is the passenger side and sensor 2 is the drivers side.

Sorry, I just double checked and this is wrong. Bank 1 is the pass side and bank 2 is drivers. Sensor 1 refers to fronts and sensor 2 refers to the rears.

To be a little more clear: on any vehicle, bank 1 is always the same side as cylinder #1, (so bank 2 is obviously the other side). And yes, sensor 1 is always before the cat, while sensor 2 is always after the cat.

Also, because sensor 2 is after the cat, the changes in readings should be very minimal if the cat and sensor 1 are working properly. So if you don't have a CEL, and you are just assuming they are bad because of the readings, I would guess that they are working as designed.

To replace the sensor(actually an update) I did tackle the job, it was not simple or easy by any means. I was looking for an easier way to replace it but there wasn't one. The sensor is in & the "MIL" is out and all is grand @ 181,060 miles. I think that is remarkable & now that the hard one is done I'll be replacing the other 3 soon.

I did all 3 yesterday but this one. I ruined a shirt cause I bled on it and my pants. Brutal. That one I'm not looking forward to at all LOL. I have to look again and see if I can move something. They hid the connectors so only Houdini can get to it.

Well what i did on the passenger side is i removed the inner fender well and of course the neg side of the battery, then took lose the trans dip stick I DIDN'T take the dip stick out wasn't able to thank God i didn't! But did pull it out of the trans, and i was then able to turn the o2 socket wrench with all of my extensions and a breaker ratchet with brut force, oh by the way you want to watch where you have your hands when the sensor breaks lose because i smacked the caliper and my finger still hurts! There is little to no space to work even with the trans tube lose. Glade i have that one done, the other 3 don't look to hateful. HA! Oh i 4got to say you are going to need an o2 sensor socket.

I actually have one already. The harbor freight one worked great. Got some swivel extensions as well.

Post the exact numerical code. Also, why are you posting in someone else's thread in the 2004-2008 truck section when you have a 1997?

Thanks for the info. The guy at the auto parts store didn't give me right info. I was lucky. The code was bank 1 sensor 2. I went right to it and it was actually loose. Cleaned it up and everything is good now.
Thanks again,
Brad
