When I had to replace my front u joint it wasn't obvious by physically moving it around. The way it became obvious was by driving forward, stopping, putting it in reverse and giving it gas to make it clunk and repeating. Forward then reversing seems to change the drive angle causing the clunk.

 

U-bolts or u-joint....

 

I guess I'll be checking both. Good thing I have a serviceable drive shaft.

 

I had the same problem and about 3 weeks later the left rear shock broke.

 

I had the "clunk" exactly as you describe and tightening the shackle bolts cured it.

 

I'm thinking it has to be loose hardware or a loose shackle since it made the clunk/pop noise when I got in the truck this morning.

 

get under there and start tightening damnit LOL

 

I would go ahead & put on the new rear shocks & then re-evaluate from there.....

 

I'll re evaluate in the morning. 98* out right now.

 

I've tightened everything except the shocks.

Still making the sound. It's a hollow-ish sound if that makes any sense. :o

I can repeat the sound when making quick slalom type turns in succession. This has me stumped. Shocks could cause this sound but they work fine, but could be loose. I sure hope this isn't axle shaft and/or rear wheel bearing related. No signs of leaks anywhere.

 

I get a single pop when going side to side (fairly hard ) from time to time. Thought it was my lugs but they were tight. I'm beginning to think its the lower ball joints as they feel dry as hell.
When I had truck in the shop for the air bag recall 6 months ago or so they did a multipoint inspection and said that the lower ball joints show wear but tires arent wearing bad at all.

 

All my front end components are new. Front is tight, rear rides well. No noises other than this one. Smooth as butter, just pops and/or clunks on a few types of turns.

 

Mine has the same random clunk. My first thought was shocks or leaves, mine does it when I pull into my driveway its kind of a steep angle.

 

Maybe sway bar links?

 

I swear it sounds like it's coming from the rear. I'll have a look at them now too this weekend.
