did you ever look at the rack bushings?

do you "feel" the noise in the steering wheel when it happens? Or in the body? like say a door panel?

 

I checked the rack and it looked good.

This morning it made the weird noise backing while the wheel was turned to the right. I do t know now, maybe it is wheel bearings, but who knows anymore, getting frustrated. I'll start with the caliper slides first, cheapest. Stumped... Need a good set of ears to help me nail this down.

Yeah I do, an hour away.

I just want to figure this out. Being the truck is an 05 I don't feel so bad replacing wear items that aren't the culprit of the noise. Wheel bearing conversion kits are expensive though, and that's one of my troubleshooting steps down the road. Good thing I'm working some OT...

 

is it a single knock or a is it several pops (per occurrence)?

 

Most of the time it's a single pop but sometimes there's a multiple pop which sounds like a creaking noise at times. The creaking makes me think bearing. The single makes me think loose caliper mounting plates or dry slide pins.

 

Maybe I should mark down what isn't making the noise.

Tie rod ends inner and outer.

Sway bar end links.

Upper and lower ball joints.

I'll be going over a myriad of things this weekend.

 

Will, is it a squeaking like metal on metal sound? Kind of high pitched?

 

Metal pop sound, mostly on a turn at slow speeds though I have heard it a few times on a sweeping high speed turn. Turn and entering a sloped driveway it makes successive pops.

 

Ok cause last summer the rotor dust shield would rub on something on my truck and it would make a weird sound. We hammered it back and hasn't come back. Esp with my 20s, the brakes must cool off easier. On a turn it would squeal briefly and the deeper I turned, sometimes it would get louder and sound like nails on a chalkboard. Doesn't sound like your issue though

 

and you're 100% sure its coming from the front end?

i know someone else mentioned it earlier, but you check the strut bolts yet?

check outer tie rod nut torque?
big honkin' lower strut bolt torque?
LCA mounting bolts? LCA bushings?

 

At first I thought it was the rear but i am sure it's the front. All you've listed is part of the myriad of things I'm going to try.

 

OK, checked everything up front and it's all good. Who knows maybe it is coming from the back. Maybe it's my imagination. Maybe aliens live under the Snuglid. Who knows... Stumped.

I have already checked all the bolts and nuts in the rear end and front end. The only major players left to me that could be really making the noise is front or rear wheel bearings (though I have no true tale bearing noise at all, no hum, no excessive play), or driveshaft, or ujoints.


Today after I messed with the front end then went for a spin. I was driving ahead on a flat road under 10 mph and turning left then right slowly, sort of like a slalom. I could hear successive popping as it turned a ways to right or left of center, if that makes any sense. If I went too slow there was no popping, I guess there wasn't enough load to make it pop.

Ugh...

Did you check U-joints, trans mount, spare tire cranked up tight, is the draw bar in the hitch?

 

Not the transmission mount. Didn't think to.
