Underpowered 5.4L?!! How is 300HP underpowered, lol.
It's underpowered in comparison to the competition's top engines. However, the 5.4 *IS* optimized for doing WORK - not the dragstrip.

ive been on other forums before menzies looking for common problems, they are harder to find than just searching around. tundras are easy though, they have frame rot problems, tailgate splitting problems. gm cars, like my 3 friends that have 10 bolt rear ends, they get get whiney over time and is a pinion bearing problem i think.

07+ tahoes have a recall on the heated washer fluid resovoir, the recall disables it, the problem is that it can catch on fire.

other than that the older 350s with intake gasket problems were common

Regret? Not on your life! Bought mine in November 03, making it one of the first of the new body series. An XL regular cab, long bed with the 4.6.

Problems? I parked under a maple tree and those little propeller looking seeds all went through the air inlet cowl and clogged the heater drain. The mechanic at the dealer broke the cowl cleaning it out. They replaced it at their cost. I don't really consider that a problem.

I had the noisy alternator problem until just a few days ago. That's fixed.

Seven years... My only problems.

I do like the little doors on my regular cab. I really like the regular cab.

Things I would do different? I'd buy 4wd. That's the only change I'd make. And, that's only because I've moved to where I could use 4wd, like when hunting. Then again, with some caution, you'd be surprised where a 2wd can go!

It's also smaller than the competition's "top" engines. That is why Ford answered them with the 6.2L. If you look at most setups sold, GM sells the 5.3L much more than the 6.2L they offer (which they didn't offer until 2008). The 6.0L was option before that and it didn't make a whole lot more HP than our 5.4L does. The 5.4L is the most popular in our trucks, so saying it's underpowered is a bit of a misnomer when most of the GM trucks you come up against are the 5.3L's with about the same HP. It's a bit like saying that a Mustang GT was underpowered compared to a Camaro SS, when they really aren't direct competitors in that trim level.

The Nissans/Toyotas have their issues, but they also only offer one engine choice, so they are betting it all on highest HP rating.

Yes, the Nissan only has the 5.6L, but the Tundra has 3 choices...4.0 V6, 4.6 V8(4.7 previously) and the 5.7L

SoonerTruck 02-10-2011 03:52 PM

I wasn't aware of the other V8 engine choice in the Tundra. Either way it seems all I ever see is the iForce 5.7L badge, lol. I don't consider the tundra to be much of a competitor though. Dodge and GM are the main trucks that I would consider to be close in capability.

Anyone else heard they were discontinuing the Titans?

mrolgren 02-10-2011 04:01 PM

No Regrets here... just wish i wasn't approaching the 100k milestone so quickly!!!

Last I heard, its future was still up in the air.

There was a deal on the table to re-badge a Dodge Ram for the next generation Titan, but that fell through.

The Nissan NV series commercial van will be based off the Titans platform and will use the 5.6, so that tells me the Titan may stick around? But the new Infiniti QX56 is now a re-badged Nissan Patrol imported from Japan. It's no longer based off the Titan platform like the previous generation, so who knows.

No regrets at all. I traded in an 02 Silverado when I bougt this one new. The Ford is just better built. I have 118,000 miles on it and do a lot of highway night driving, so looked at a 2010. Just like my 2005 better. Going to keep on going.

2004Triton5.4 02-10-2011 08:56 PM

Nope. I love my truck. I do wanna get something newer though. My next truck will be another F150 with the ecoboost or 5.0 if I can wait long enough too get one for a decent price. As for the people mentioning the 5.4 being less reliable then a 4.6, you do realise the only difference between a 2v5.4 and 2v 4.6 is the length of the stroke right? The same thing goes for a 3v5.4 and 3v4.6...

DarrenWS6 02-10-2011 09:10 PM

Not really. My only regret is not saving more money and waiting to buy than when I did, I could possibly have gotten a better model.. Lariat, FX4 Lux.. I still want to trade.

03GT04FX4 02-10-2011 09:33 PM

i have none at all. mine was made in August of '04 (does that mean it's an '04, '04 1/2 or '05) and i purchased it in October '04 on my b'day. girlfriend was pissed and said i didn't need nothing that nice. she was driving a Lexus ES300. (sucks to be her) i mean it's a truck, my hotrod is the '03 GT. as of today it only has 38,500 on the ticker.

The 04-08 5.4's are 3 valve, the 04-08 4.6's are 2 valves.

Even though my tranny went out prematurely, I have absolutely no regrets at all. It's been my daily driver for 3 years now so the only regret I have is selling my wife's Jetta to my brother-in-law! But I love my truck, I love working on it and I love driving it. I always chuckle at all of the "it's underpowered" comments as I have no issues with the power and accelleration one bit. Heck, I used to own a lifted '95 Tahoe with throttle body injection and 33's, so my F150 is a hot rod in comparison!! But my truck is MINE, so I love modding it, buying crap for it and just plain driving it.
