To everybody with a noisy 5.4 3v engine!

Well yesterday it was a little over a month that my truck, 07 5.4 3v, 45K miles, has sat outside through multible snow storms,& sub zero temps. Truck has not moved an inch! I said to myself I had better finally start her up for a while, after I cleared a foot of snow from her after the latest storm at 19 degrees! I have Ford remote starter so I was standing by the front end when she started. She started on the 1st crank of the starter, fired right up, making absolutely to strange engine noises. Nothing but pure 5.4 Modular V8 Bliss from the Roush Dual stainless exhaust! Since new it's seen nothing but Ford recommended 5w-20 weight oil & a Ford FL-820-S Oil Filter. Only mods if you want to call it is always a Synthetic oil...at 3-5K OCI's. & an Optima Red Top Battery!..I don't understand where all of you are getting crazy start up engine noise from?.....I won't be suprised if I see 20 years of reliable service out of my Ford!...

my truck has 54k on it and it sounds like a diesel until it idles down that little bit that it idles down. nothing but motocraft 5-20 and fl820s filters here. once its idling all i can hear is injector tick. the diesel sound im hearing might be that on a louder level but it sounds like a click clack rock in the oil pan noise to me. im not gonna change my phasers though until they get as bad as the ones on youtube.

Only sound I hear from my 05 FX4 is a high pitch whistle when it is first started especially if I drive it before it warms up a little bit. Goes away once the engine warms up. Never gave it much though as my previous vheichle Chevy Tahoe with a 350 did the same thing.

You use synthetic and change every 3 to 5k. Don't you always bring up the fact I use synthetic and change it too often?

Either way, I am glad your truck is running well, though.

It depends how much work was performed by the truck during the OCI. If I have done alot of towing or hauling, I have had as much as 2000Lbs in the bed, once, & I usually tow between 3-5K loads, I will change it out at 3K OCI. If the truck has not performed any work 5K OCI....

I took my truck in on Jan 5th. It had a tick during idle and sounded like something flapping during startup. I figured it was the cam phasers so I took it in. The truck has 105,000 miles and I have always used Full synthetic 5w-20 in it. I just stopped at the dealer today and the truck is sitting outside with no engine and the new reman just arrived today and is sitting in a crate waiting to get put in. They said the oil pump was on its way out and wasnt pumping enough pressure in effect the bearings in the engine were scorched.

Mine's fine at cold start ups but when it gets warm it has the phaser noise. After the dealer said it was normal and watching a video on flatrate I believe it is normal and not anything to worry about. So all in all my 5.4 is holding up fine at 114,000 miles.

I have an exhaust leak during initial startup when its really cold outside. Other than that no problems. In fact never had one yet with the engine/tranny. I've cause a few no start issues, but been good overall.

Its an 06 with less than 40k. Will probably keep another 5 or more years, unless ecoboost fever gets to me.

Mine's fine on a cold start, I get chatter once it's warm though. Mechanic said it was the injectors and it's normal. Hopefully he's correct.

Mine has the start up rattle, my buddy's 07 FX4 has the start up rattle but my phasers sound bad. I'm not worried though. The truck has been doing this for over 60k miles now and still runs fine so I don't see these problems negatively affecting reliability. Also at 114k miles I think my truck is stronger than it was at 65k when I bought it used. It's like the more miles this truck acquires the more power it produces.

Edit: Motorcraft 5w-20 every 3k miles and motorcraft filter.
