If it is really cold, my power steering pump whines for about 15 seconds. I also have an idler pulley starting to make some noise.

OP- is it possible that your hearing isn't what it used to be?

Thumbs down

Has anyone with the noisy phasers tried warming up to full temp, then holding rpm between 800 to 1300 rpm. That is when mine is at it worst. I can here it
during initial acceleration and while cruising at low speeds 15 to 25 mph. The thing clatters like crazy. I have had it in 3 times to be looked at , ford says its normal.

maybe some of us have exhaust leaks when cold. my truck makes that very silent popping sound underload that ive always thought was the headers or something. my dads 05 stx 4.6 does it too.

I have a noise for you guys too!

I hate to bring this post back 10+ days later but my 06 fx4 makes a "sssssshhhhhhhhhhhooooooooooop" noise on initial start up. I used to have that loud whistle but replaced the alternator and it was gone. But this "sssssssssshhhhhhhhoooooooooop" noise doesnt sound normal and its nothing like anyone has described here lately. It almost sounds like somethings not catching for like 1-3 sec than catches and is gone. I think that the colder it is, the longer the sound is. Is this belt or pulley related? I had the idler and tensioner pulley's replaced a month ago cause they were gone too but this noise still remains. like most other noises only when its cold.

P.S. Didnt mean to high jack the thread but it is noise related!

very audible "lifter tap" when idling and when driving and I take foot off of gas. Sounds like a quiet diesel.

That sounds like the injectors openning and closing. They click.

i cant figure mine out. my friend has an 07 just like mine, same color even, with 39k on it, and it is as quiet as can be. if i listen hard i hear the injectors firing, im beginning to think mines an exhaust leak as i can hear it better in my passenger side fender than my driver side. ive taken a video and im going to try to get a better one soon to post

I have the exact same noise and like you said its coming from the passenger side. My first guess was an exhaust leak too. My 99 chevy had a couple and one was right at the manifold. and it sounds very similar to what i have now. Havent took the time to really check it out yet tho.

I have a hard time hearing things that are "very silent", so I can't tell you if we have the same noise. I do get a high pitch whine on occasion, when it's very cold outside -20C to -50C (-4F to -58F)

How would I make them more quiet?

i dont think you can.

i think my ticking is exhaust leak. there is a way to look around the header, and connections in the exhaust for black marks where the exhaust gas is excaping, im going to try that. im also goign to note what it sounds like when i first change the oil to see if perhaps my oil is gunking up and causing starvation problems to some places

You can't make the injectors quieter. They are clicking as they electronically open and close. Look at it as a good thing. That noise is a vast improvement over the old carburators we used to have.

If clicking injectors bother you, it's a good thing you didn't drive vehicles back in the days of solid lifters.....................
