Forgot to mention, when I did this, I didn't even remove the wheels. Probably would have been easier that way, though.

To each his own. I simply prefer the look to rattle can provides. If yours came out how you want it, that's all that matters.

Here's an update of my undercarriage 4 years later. Driven each winter in a heavy salt climate with no undercoating, just fresh Rustoleum every year.

Thanks

Taping the bolts was too annoying, plus they weren't coated and I didn't want them to rust.

I have a little over 93k miles right now.

Another thing I do to preserve the truck with all the salt spray, is i spray white litheum grease inside all the body panels, around the rear wheel wells (not on the inside of the wheel well, they don't rust there, they would rust from above where you can't see. If you crawl under the rear, you can see the small gaps that open above the real wheel well. I spray up there), also, the bottom seam of the doors, tailgate, inside lower front fenders, under the bed (especially bed supports, those will rust out fast without protection) and under the floor. I do not do any of this on the frame or suspension because that would make painting much harder. I've painted the rear wheel wells with Rustoleum bedliner. The frame and suspension are Rustoleum semi gloss black.

All of this is muuuch cheaper than getting it undercoated yearly and looks way better.

Thanks again!

Just a thought too, look up fluid film. We've been using that the last couple years. Great stuff. Spray it under the whole under carriage. It's not a permanent coating either.

... etc ...

Oh, they look great painted, though you could have cleared them heavy "way back when" if you had thought about it when more new. I also meant to comment on the fender wells .... I like that black inside them much more than the white, ... I did same on my red '07 a few years ago.

I also took your lead years ago when you started this thread and painted my '07's frame, axle, etc ... and I did clear coat some fasteners but most on the frame and suspension, I just painted ..... but I confess, I haven't done it every year .... but then to my knowledge she's only seen a real snow storm drive once for a few miles in winter 2012/13 as we headed out early one morning at like 2AM for a Christmas trip to in-laws in Ga. and she got a good top to bottom wash that afternoon in Ga.

Only 93K, that truck's gonna retire with you.

I've read good things about fluid film. Actually, it seems white litheum in the spray can protects against rust just as well and stays in place the same. FF just doesn't attact all the dust like the litheum. But, FF is about $10 a can and lithium is $2 at Walmart.

I do remember I ended up priming all the bolts at one point. It was just taping them off that ended up taking the most time haha.

What part of the country are you in? If I didn't drive in salt every winter I probably wouldn't be painting it yearly either.

All I know is that there are no other trucks my age or even two years old up here that look like mine does.

Nothing worse than seeing a nice truck covered in rust on the underside.

Wow. That's crazy. I might do mine now. How many cans did it take to do it the first time/coat?

Ryan.
