2008 Supercrew - what to watch for when buying?

I'm getting back into an F150 after 4 years of bouncing around in cars and a Wrangler (which is going to become a full time toy now!).

I am considering two trucks above everything else at this point and would like some input.

They are:

2008 F150 Supercrew Fx4. 92k miles, 5.4, auto, 4x4, beautiful condition inside and out, not tonneau cover and only a drop in bedliner. Charcoal with black interior, cool gauge cluster and dash colors (carbon fiber look). $20,500 out the door with plates and title transfer.

2007 F150 Supercrew XLT. 51k miles, 5.4, auto, 4x4, supposedly perfect condition (i haven't even seen pics yet, only heard the description from my father's best friend). Black with tan interior wood grain dash, boring gauge cluster.

I'm REALLY digging the looks of the 08, but the mileage is so much lower that I'm likely to go with the 07 based on that and the slightly lower price.

Thoughts? Anything I should be looking out for in either year? How about the other 04 through 06 models? The only thing I know of is that the spark plugs can sieze up in the heads. Anything else?

'08 is a bit over priced with that many miles, $17,2 tops for the '08.

Thank you, I can't find a Screw of the 08 variety any cheaper! In Michigan, the 04s are still selling for over 18k generally.

My sister lives in PA so I may need to check in her area. Thanks!

If you look and compare 08s, look at the sparkplug boots. Brown indicates it has the redesigned heads with plugs that do not break. Black boots use the two piece plugs, same as the earlier years.

dunno specifically for the 08s but check the suspension for bad ball joints, upper/lower arms, etc... they tend to fail.

Sounds good to me, although I did some craigslist digging and I couldn't find any 2008 Screws anywhere close to the 17k figure. Scabs sure, but not Screws. If I'm looking in the wrong places, let me know.

What truck do you have, I may be a good reason for you to bring it to Michigan! I plan to buy tomorrow but could wait for the right truck.

And thanks for the suspension tips. The 2008 comes with a 3 month, 10k warranty and I'll make sure to have the hole thing completely gone through before I hand over the cash. We have a shop here that does a 75 point inspection for free (and it's owned by a Jeep buddy) that can get me in quickly.

Thanks

What were the upgrades between years 2004 and 2008? I'll look for a thread on that in a second, but wanted to make sure I asked sooner than later in case it wasn't already posted.

FWIW, I can't even find an e-bay 2008 Screw for less than 19999 (is something going on in Texas that is causing them all to sell their Screws?).

2005 gained audiophile sound systems in the higher trim models. Brake issues began, fuel injector issue began.

2006 gained round fog lamps, 6'5 bed option on Supercrew, lean condition from '04 - '05 partially fixed, brake issues still possible.

2007 gained the FX2 package, and FX4 Luxury package, which is a Lariat & FX4 cross bred, best trim option imo. Even comes with semi-dark headlamps.

2008, later model trucks came with redesigned heads to prevent spark plug breaking, Supercrew XL trim offered. no other big difference over 2007.

I have an 04. The 08 is probably going for high value because it's still fairly new. The miles are probably from a lot of highway. With proper maintenance it could go 200k. I'm sure you could talk the price a bit.

Just for comparison.

I think the 08 is way overpriced. Two months ago I purchased from a dealer an 08 Screw with 33,000. Certified Warrantied to 100,000 or 4 more years. XLT Lifted with 33's. Very clean, looked as if it never left the lot for 21,700. I wish I had known about the redesigned heads before I purchased as I have the old design and I have Cam Phaser noise, but it should be covered under the extended warranty.

Don't remember the exact date, but if the manufacture date on the 08 is after about 10/9/07 then pick the 08, otherwise go with the 07. Then you will have the redesigned heats. Also, get the vin off of both and you can bring the sticker up on your computer, that may help you decide.

Audiophile has been available from 2004 and up, and the FX4 luxury pack became available in 06, Tylus had one.

The 07-08 lux packs were different than the 06, the 06's had standard black textured door and tailgate handles and the black textured h-bar grill, the 07-08's had smooth painted handles and smooth body color h-bar grill.

Well, I settled on a 2008 XLT with 51k on it for just under 21K out the door. They were asking 23899 but had been sitting on it since there was snow on the ground (pictures). It seems awesome so far and has the new heads.

Thank you for the input! I was all set to make the deal on the 91k model when this came up.

Now for the leveling kit and some decent tires (before winter anyway).
