Knock under load

I'm getting an upper engine knock between 1000 and 2000 rpm. It only seems to do it when the truck is in gear and I'm accelerating lightly. Any ideas? and please oh please don't say cam phazer......

Have you tried higher octane gas? If you have a tuner you could play with the timing.

Great.... I'm almost tempted to pull the engine and do my spark plugs and cam phasers all at once. Maybe add some ponys while i'm in it...

Probably is cam phaser. Mine did that. Engine just ran like crap. knock got louder and louder. I replaced the cam phasers and found one broke. It came out in 2 pieces. The spring popped out and basically it was running bad because of it. It was running in full retard, I guess. Replaced the cam phasers and it runs like a new truck. Never ran better. Clean the throttle body out while you're in there.

no need to pull the engine. You can swap cam phasers out easily in a few hours. Spark plugs can be done while you have everything out of the way. Hardest part is the back bolt on the valve covers. Use a small socket and just take your time.

Thanks for easing my mind a little. This truck if nothing else has taught me not to be afraid to rip apart things that used to scare the crap out of me! I mean really whats the worst that can happen. I swap the 5.4 trash for a 04 Cobra engine?

Think these would resolve the cam phaser noise?

They would, but why not replace the phaser? It's not that difficult. Check the "Articles and How-to" forum. There's a write-up in there on the process. You can make a lot more torque down low with the phaser than by-passing them. The lock-outs are intended for aggressive camshaft profiles.
