Leather Clear coat (04 Lariat)

Just purchased a 04 Lariat and just noticed that the clear coat on the driver's seat is flaking off, is there any way to fix the coating and prevent the spread of the flaking?

Maybe someone who does auto leather dyeing could help you, but I don't think they'll have a very permanent solution. The leather today is cheap and sucks bigtime!!! The way it is "processed" means most of it isn't going to last a long time before it does that. I don't remember what that is called right now, but it is a way to use cheaper leather and make it look nice when it actually has flaws in it. Kinda like putt'in a silk dress on a pig, gonna fool a few people for a while, but soon every ones gonna know the truth.

looks like you slide in and out of the seat... maybe you might have had a spill on the seat?

Nothing much you can do, re-upholster and use leather conditioner frequently. I do mine 3-4 times a year but I should do more.

It's not actually clear coat. Like i said, most of todays factory leather is really cheap stuff and the "coating" the use on it is actually to disguise cheap leather as something better. Ever notice how a leather wrapped steering wheel starts to peel after 2-4 years? Same thing. I will have to say, the picture he posted looks like it has actually had something sprayed on it, a normal deterioration of today's junk leather doesn't "peel" quite that bad. I have a set of new "take offs" from a Lariat. The tag on the inside of the covers says "Made in China" and there's not really a whole lot of leather even at that, more vinyl than leather. This is from a brand new Lariat! You have to buy a pretty high dollar vehicle today to get decent leather. I will say, my one son and DIL drive Suburbans and GM uses a lot better leather than Ford does. Their '97, bought new and 11 years and 180k mi when they sold it and bought a new one, had leather that was in VERY nice shape, no real deteriouration at all.
