im curious if this is possible to swap out a 4spd auto to the new 6spd? since its the same motor, i would think you could swap the ECM and trans and voila? maybe not

The trans has it's own control module from my understanding.

I'm going to say no at this point

The 6 speed has it's own TCM that operates seperately from the PCM...they do talk, but the PCM has virtually no input on the tranny anymore.

It is a simple bolt in with a new driveshaft being the only real component you'd need to replace. the wiring problems will be the nightmare. I've been looking at the wiring schematics and it looks like you'd need a complete 09+ PCM, TCM and wiring harness swap.

anything can be done if you have the money.

btw, the 6 speed is nice...but it really isn't all that much spectacular over the 4 speed. 1st and 2nd gear are geared extremely low...1st is lower than the 1st in a F-450. It's nice, but I get the exact same MPG's as my 2006 FX4 Screw, and from talking with the 03-06 Expy guys, we get comparable fuel economy. My Expy is just slightly more "sporty" due to those 1st 2 gears

Based on what tylus posted, I think it might be possible to just have the trans functions turned off in the PCM then just bolt up the 6 speed with the TCM and it should work. Thoughts?

And also based on what he posted it doesn't sound like it would be worth it.

Probably not, the cost involved to make the swap, plus the cost of new gears in the front/rear axles to take advantage of the lower first gear in the six speed would not be worth the 1-maybe 2 mpg improvement.

Our 4R75's have a 2.84 first gear ratio, the six speed has a lower first gear, thus allowing more off the line accelleration if you keep the same gear ratio in the axles. On the other end of the scale the sixth gear is about the same as fourth in the 4r70/75, so there will no change in mileage w/o changing axle gears.

not worth the extra 2 mpg and the ****ting shifting paterns.....had an 09 f150 and had it back 4 times to have the tranny looked at! Finally sold it and went back to a 04 with a tried and true 4spd.

Just my opinion......

Hello!

Oh man, that's drastic!

You could have addressed that with a $400 custom tuned programmer and saved all the grief. Just sayin'...

As fer the 09+ TCM talking to a older PCM - good luck.

You want sportier, you do a gear swap. Problem solved. And - you get to keep yer OD lockout

more to this story than just a wierd shifting tranny.

I had a 2009 Screw rental and my 2006 Screw together for about 1 week. No way in hell that the 4 speed was any better. the 6 speed shifted like butter and the truck had alot of pep.

my current 6 speed in the Expy is almost identical. it has a little bit rougher 1-2 shift (ie: you can feel it occasionally), but otherwise it makes that 6,000+ lbs monster pretty peppy.

I have a hard time believing someone would drop a brand new truck and the butt-raping they'd take on the resell just for a slightly better shift feeling
