Finally Replaced My Sparkplugs

Been contemplating it since 80k miles. Now 106k miles and truck hesitated in low RPMs gradually getting worse and worse. It felt like small bumps in the road at first but then it almost became a shudder.

So shopped around for parts and tools. Calculated to be 200-225.

Then called around to the different stealerships in the Houston area. Most avged about 425 and 50 bucks for every broken plug. Others charged extra 65 for soaking the plugs. Some only spoke of pulling the head. Didn't make me feel confident about their skill. Finally found a fair deal at Champion Ford in Katy. 450 flat rate, no matter how many plugs broke. Got out of there paying $509. What's up with this 50 dollar disposal fee?

I figured paying 250-300 bucks for labor was worth the hassle. I haven't worked car in years. Used to do a lot bolt on stuff my DSM and 300ZTT. If I got into trouble with the sparkplugs not sure if knew or had enough expertise to recover.

So anyways dropped the truck off. They said 4 broke off which probably would've cost me 650+ at other dealerships. Truck is running smoothly now. Gonna do an oil change soon. Found some good deals at the parts store. Not gonna pay 40 at Ford's quickchange. Used to be 30 and I could handle that not having to get dirty under the truck and dropping off oil to recycle. I can't believe the prices on simple stuff like this.

Knock on wood my truck doesn't have any other major breakdowns or malfunctions. Thanks to this board and the plethora of info to make good desicions.

I've heard of people spending and got quotes of 800 - 18xx if plugs broke.

Will be starting my plug change in the next week or so...

I just had mine done at the dealership too and they left my plugs in a box in my cupholder. Disposal fee sounds like BS to me too.

It would be helpful if there was a youtube video on how to change the plugs.

I had mine replaced at the ford dealership here in layton utah and they only charged me $163 for mine to be replaced. And they said if any of them broke they would charge $25 a plug to remove. none of mine broke tho. i dont understand why other ford dealerships are charging so much to change spark plugs.

i dont understand why the dealerships are charging so much more everywhere else. I called 4 dealerships here in utah and they all quoted me between 150 and 180. And they all said 25 extra for every plug that breaks.

Sounds as if the labor rate there is about 1/2 or 1/3 what it is in most of the country.

hey everybody,
For ssome this maybe too little too late, but I don't like when the dealerships rape us!!!!!!!!!! Ihave an 04 Lariat, thru some effort I found a tool that handles every possible scenerio for our breaking plugs, check your local advanced auto,it costs about 90.00 but will save u a ton in labor once u figure out how to use it!!!!!!!!!! I've known of guys who have had to pay anywhere from 1500-2500 for the labor because all the plugs broke off!!!!
