2006 ford f-150 4x4 xlt four wheel drive went out

I own a 2006 ford f150 4x4 xlt and just recently my four wheel drive light and four wheel hi and low will not engage. I took it pheasant hunting and when i got back it stopped working. I dont believe I went over 45 in the cold conditions, and have no idea why it wont engage. I rarely use the four wheel drive, I only use it in the winter when I am hunting and sometimes to pull people out of mud and ditches. If anyone has any input it would be great.

Sounds like the electronic shift motor on the rear of the transfer case has gone south. Give it a tap or two with a hammer and try the 4WD afterwards and see if it works. If it does you will be replacing that electronic shift motor soon.

I had the same problem one time with my 2006. It only happened once, when I actually needed it during mud season. Unfortunately I had to get pulled out by a Chevy. Once I got pulled out, I tried to engage it one more time, and wala, it worked! Havent had any other issues with the 4x4 since this happened last year.

I had a 2006 leased xlt that the 4x4 went out in at 36,000 miles. I turned it in without getting it repaired. I now have a 2007 stx that it just went out in at 44,700 miles. This was a sensor that went out. I think its a problem that Ford should address. My Ford's with manual lever and lock out hubs, never once had a problem. If offered on a 150 that is the route I would go.

I'll second the motion - or in this case - lack of motion. Nine times out of ten this will be the problem with the symptoms you mentioned.

BTW, replacing the ESOF motor is a piece of cake too, so don't pay somebody big bucks to do it. It's located right on the back of the Transfer Case.

Mine got stuck in 4 low once. I just kept playing with until it kicked out. This was before I knew the route of the problem. I have used it several times since with no problems.

I've never had problems with 4wd engaging or disengaging on my '06, but then again, I have to reach down and shift it myself.
