Yakima Outdoorsman
i was looking at getting a Yak Outdoorsman also. Decided to have a machine shop weld a similar type rack i only went apx. 16" above bed. I just carry a couple bikes around. Cost me about $100. I'll try to get pics up asap!
My rig
I have one Outdoorsman, and one roof bar on my SCAB, with 6 ft bars in each one. The roof bar is over the back doors. I carry a 14' and a 12' kayak flat with room to spare. I also have a front receiver hitch, and this summer I had an "L" shaped bar with a loop on the top made to put the loop just above the top edge of the hood for my front tie-down straps. It all works pretty well. If loading the kayaks myself I take a piece of 2' pipe and slip it over the end of the roof rack bar, set the front end of the kayak up there, and then lift the back end up onto the Outdoorsman.

If I did it right there are now pics in an album at my profile. https://www.f150online.com/forums/me...56-lee-f-.html
Yeah, it's a Draw-Tite front receiver hitch, bolts right on. I have one on my wife's Explorer, too, so we can carry the bikes on the front if we tow the camper with that. The cargo carrier is just a standard one, and it will hold three and maybe four bikes. It has a vertical post added to strap the bikes to. I also had an "L" shaped piece (with a loop on top) made out of 2" square tube to use as a front tie-off for the kayaks when there's no cargo carrier on the front. That works on both vehicles, too.
It would be nice to be able to carrry more bikes on the front and keep the bed available to store luggage and gear.
I saw an F150 today with a rack like your Outdoorsman, but built out of green treated 4x4s. I really need to carry a camera with me. He did a nice job building it, but using wood just doesn't do it for me.

Thanks - my approach is to go functional (or multi-functional) but keep it cleanly done. The Outdoorsman and the roof bar both come off in about 15 minutes, and the cargo carrier is usually in the shed. I have a heavy-gage plug in the grill opening direct wired to the battery that I can plug jumper cables or an inverter into without opening the hood, and "the dream" is to someday use that connection and the front receiver for a winch - but my wallet keeps saying "no"
