just bought an fx4, couple questions

hey guys, i just bought an 04 fx4, black leather interior, 6 disc cd changer, seems to be very well equiped
first off i was wondering if dealers typically provided build sheets for these things so i can find out exactly what options i have and dont have. i come from the jeep world and this is a common thing to do

2nd, i noticed theres a big long black box under my driver side rear seat, i didn't take it off to look at it, but it looks like there might be a small sub under there, and possibly an amp inside? anybody replace this amp/sub combo with a better one? what size is the sub?

another question is tuner related, i see alot of talk about troyer performance and PHP, haven't really distiguished much between the two, both seem to offer custom tunes. I'm leaning toward the PHP Gryphon, but i'm not sure it's right for me. I like the idea of the dash mounted monitor thingy, but all i'm really looking for is improved throttle response, and firmer shifts. feel free to suggest a tuner for my liking

and lastly i've got an exhaust question. i've done quite a bit of my own exhaust work, and have been considering swapping out the massive monstrosity of a muffler with an 18" magnaflow polished muffler. it seems that the end of the rear tailpipe is 2 3/4", is this the size all the way through the exhaust? if not, what size is the pipe after the bend going into the muffler, and what size is it at the exit of the muffler
also i know inlet/outlet offset isn't extremely crucial in a muffler choice, i usually just go with center in and out, but does anybody recommend a specific inlet/outlet offset? at this point in time i won't be doing a full exhaust, nor do i want an extremely loud exhaust, so i'll only be going with a magnaflow, and leaving the stock cats in

here are some pictures of the new truck, i love it!

and heres a pic of my old jeep, for those interested

have you looked in your manual in the glove box. I know a lot of times they get folded and stuffed in that book somewhere. I dont know, just an idea.

Congrats! Nice truck! Yeah I think you can get a rundown of what it has from the VIN#. And I think there is someone on this site that can do it? Sorry I don't know who but I have seen it in another thread before. It sounds like you do have a factory sub under the rear seat. Saleen makes an exact fit direct replacement for it (although I am not sure how big an improvement) or you can go the aftermarket route but then you will need amp, bass restorers to offset the factory setting, etc but it can be done and the is a lot of good info out there on it. There are many good tuner options I just sent my Edge Evo in to PHP to be upgraded but look around and decide what is right for you. I also swapped my stock muffler for the 18" magnaflow. I really like it, not loud but a nice deep note. Mine was the center and offset other side. The pipe I believe is 2.5 all around. Good luck with your mods if you hang around here very long you will never run out of new ideas!

Theres the website for the window sticker. Just replace your vin# with the sample number.

Nice looking truck you purchased.

yup, build sheets are cake to get a hold of.

Box under the rear seat is most likely a sub. Might have extra storage, but most likely a sub. Yes, tons of extra stuff out there. I don't like "bumpin bass" and all that jazz, so i am no help here.

I run PHP custom tunes. I called each of the big three, talked with whom I could, and PHP won my money. To be perfectly honest, I think it is six of one, half a dozen of the other. Tunes really wont feel very different. I liked PHP's service, their forum, and just their attitude. I have talked with Bill a number of times, great guy. I would sugest doing the same. Call around, find one YOU like. Asking for opinions here will simply start a stupid e-fight. I liked the extra gauges with the Gryphon too, way cool ! Can't say enough good things about them. My opinion though. No matter who you go with, you'll be amazed at the change ! When you go back to stock tunes after running custom for a few months, truck feels like a total turd. Tunes wake it right up.

nice lookin truck though. Did you sell or trade in the Heep ? Or do you still have it ? Samurai guy myself, love wheeling. Live and breathe it.

i thought it was 2.5 also but the tailpipe fit over the inlet on the 2.5" inside diameter tips i had laying around, i measured it with a caliper and sure enough it's 2.75" OD

Exhaust is 2.5" throughout, but the tailpipe is 2.75". Just get a 2.5" outlet muffler and the shop will fab it.

Nice choice in truck you've got there.

A lot of dealers around here when they sell a new vehicle, they will fold up the window sticker and put it inside the Owners Manual somewhere. That's where I found mine at least.

EDIT: Maybe mine is just an earlier build, but I wasn't aware of any 04's that had the back-up sensors in the bumper. Anyone want to make me smart about that?

Also, pay no attention to your bed shaking around behind you (especially when empty), it scared the hell out of me when I first bought my truck, only to find out it's normal on these trucks.

That long black box is the factory sub, looks like this

The sub inside the box is an 8" dual voice coil, don't know the rating of the speaker or the amp that is bolted to the underside of the box. The factory setting is very conservative on the sub. If you upgrade to a better H.U. be advised the factory sub amp uses +5v DC for the turn on lead and aftermarket decks put out 12v. You will need to step down the voltage or the amp will pop everytime you turn on the sub.

I replaced my sub with a kicker comp VR 8" DVC in the factory box after I mounted a 3/4" thick mdf spacer ring to gain the needed mounting depth, the factory box has only 3 5/8" depth and I needed 4 1/4"

I guess my truck is just about as base model FX4 you can get. I've got a power rear slider, but no moonroof, no adjustable pedals, no backup sensors, no leather, manual climate control (did 04 FX4's have available digital climate control?) No factory sub, I'm sure the list is longer.

But I've got the rectangular fog lamps!

The only thing I don't have is cilmate control but I have everything else, I don't think they did it for the FX4 in 04...but I could be wrong
