just bought an fx4, couple questions
That long black box is the factory sub, looks like this

The sub inside the box is an 8" dual voice coil, don't know the rating of the speaker or the amp that is bolted to the underside of the box. The factory setting is very conservative on the sub. If you upgrade to a better H.U. be advised the factory sub amp uses +5v DC for the turn on lead and aftermarket decks put out 12v. You will need to step down the voltage or the amp will pop everytime you turn on the sub.
I replaced my sub with a kicker comp VR 8" DVC in the factory box after I mounted a 3/4" thick mdf spacer ring to gain the needed mounting depth, the factory box has only 3 5/8" depth and I needed 4 1/4"

Actually I upgraded the radio and planned on swapping in a better speaker and bigger amp. I put the deack in first and the factory sub and amp combo sounded awesome after I ditched the factory radio. Aftermarket radios allow the stock stuff to use its full potential. Since I already purchased the new sub and had an old kenwood amp I went ahead and swapped them out, the only part left from the original audiophile system is the sub box itself. The amp I used was an old kenwood PS-150 (75W RMS x 2 @4ohms) with each channel driving one coil
Nice choice on the truck.... I wish mine came with reverse sensors... Mayb one day I'll put some in myself... By joining this website you might as well set aside $5k + and use it for mod'n truck.... So many new things pop up everyday
I can't really compare what I have to the factory sub in an F150 because mine never had one. However, my wife's 04 Eddie Bauer Explorer does have the factory sub and my setup will blow it out of the water. If you look at my sig you can see what I have. I am still running all of this off of the factory head unit. An aftermarket HU would definately be an upgrade sound wise but I kinda like the factory 6 disc and factory look. It suprises anyone who gets in my truck and turns up the volume. I didn't do it all at once either. Replaced the door speakers first then over time added amps, subs etc.
Great Looking truck, you will be happy you went with the FX4 package
Would you be interested in trading the black steps off your 04 for the chrome ones off my 06? They are the same tube style as yours and in great shape, I'm just going for the all black look on my truck

i went flat broke paying for all the crap i did to the jeep, and when it was time to sell it i didnt get anything back from it. i threw over 10,000 into a 14000 dollar jeep and got 4000 for a trade.. couldn't find any serious buyers for it
and the bike is what's eating most of my money at the moment
Both Troyer and PHP offer great custom tunes. The primary difference is that the Gryphon offers the gauges in the display, so it mainly comes down to if you want the gauges or not. I have them and would hate to do without them. Others do just fine without them.
