Dam that looks good. Mine is not bad at all but I would love to paint it. I wish you was close to me b/c I'd pay you to paint mine.

Most likely due to this:

Wow .... I have almost 145,000 miles on mine and it looks nothing like that.

Was that from the storm back in mid June?

I've done this as well... Worth the little bit of time IMO...

I didn't tape any of the bolts thought just kinda went spray happy...

But it did turn out nice... I do it once a year just a light coat to brightn it up

That was a freak storm back in '07. I was AZ at the time so couldn't move either of the trucks or the doomed car in the garage.

Just my opinion... But I wouldn't paint the whole rear axle DSG...

Now the Diff cover that would be cool!

I put on new shocks at the same so it took me a bit longer.

Thanks for the compliments. It's a lot easier on a late model. I don't have much rust to contend with. I scraped loose rust with a wire brush, then wiped it with a soapy rag, then took a pressure washer to it. Once it dried I taped some areas then painted it. Later when I removed the u-bolts to do some suspension work I touched up some areas. Took me more than 20 minutes.

The paint is used is Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer. Can says: 'Instantly converts rust to a protected paintable surface!' This is a final coat, but can also be painted with a reguar black paint for extra protection. This paint is designed to work on rusty metal.

Rust Reformer

This paint is expensive at $7 a can, but it's still a cheap project. I used one whole can.

Excellent thread! Getting ready for a car/truck show on the 19th and will address the undercarriage as well. Now if I could just get access to a lift for an hour or so.

7 months later... The paint looks exactly the same. No chips, no issues. It seems like dirt won't even stick to it. After spraying it with the pressure hose, it looks brand new again. I am so glad I spent for 4 dollars and 10 minutes does this. In fact, I look it looks better than how they come from the factory. I rented a 2010 XLT Supercrew 5.4 4x4 the other week and the axle already looked horrible with its gray, brown and white mix of colors.

Axle still looks great. Ended up doing the leaf springs too. From looking underneath or looking in the wheel wells, the truck looks better than it did when it was brand new.

If you want it to look factory, do not use gloss paint.
