An idea for a spare key....

I haven't done this yet, but it seems like a good idea.

I was talking with a fellow F150 owner about spare keys for our trucks, and we both already knew that the "chipped" keys are WAAAY expensive.

So, he told me he just went down and had a non-chipped key made for about $3, which he carries in his wallet. Okay, granted it won't start his truck, but it doesn't need to. If he ever locks his chipped key inside his truck (again) he can just open the door, to get to them.

I'm even thinking you could hide a non-chipped key in one of those little magnet boxes somewhere under the truck. I mean heck, even if somebody found it, your alarm would still be set (of course you have an alarm, right ?) and they couldn't start the truck with that key, even if your alarm was not set.

Anybody else do this ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyway, I've had this truck for a year, and I'm still not completely sure about when it will "automatically" lock the doors, because it thinks it should. It's not supposed to lock the doors with the keys in the ignition > and the truck turned off.
But a while back, I was launching the boat, motor still running, and it locked both my doors ! Thank God I had my drivers window down !
Anyway....
Your thoughts ?
Fish
You can install a keypad on the door. If you have power locks, I believe you can do it. Granted, it does cost a little more than 3 dollars.
Do yall fit keys in your wallets? That would bug me. Mine is already stuffed full of money.
I have a gaping hole where the money is supposed to be thanks, in part, to this site. Maybe I should throw a key in there just so it feels fuller? I have a keypad, so it doesn't even need to be a cut key!
Keypad is one of my favorite options. When going to the beach or somewhere else that may not be key-friendly, just lock the keys in the truck out of sight.
I would never buy another truck without a keypad. I had a '99 Mountaineer with a keypad, and then got an '03 Screw without one. I did not like it. Now have an '04 Screw with keypad and love it. I had an extra key for my door and my Roll-n-Lock and keep it my ashtray. This way I can unlock my tailgate and cover without have to turn off my truck. In your case an extra key is always a good idea, just in case you need it.
Love my keypad but, I also keep a spare hidden on the truck (good luck finding it though).
The chipped keys aren't crazy expensive... more like $13 shipped from ebay. Then pay maybe a couple of bucks to get it cut (many places will do it for free but, I'd use a lock shop - not your local Home Depot). So, new key (and you can program it (it's in your manual)... maybe $20, max.
By the time you get a non-transponder key, decent magnetic box, you're already half of that cost so, I'd just get it. It's $20... empty wallet or not, it's not *that* painful.
Just like Rockpick I had bought 3 extra keys on ebay for $36 shipped. My truck only came with 1 key. I was lucky enough to know someone who has the ford tool to program a key when only 1 is present. So he cut all of my 3 keys and even gave me a 4th for free. So once he programmed the 2nd key, I could do like the manual said and program the other 3 unprogrammed, cut keys. Now everyone has one and I have a keypad. I vote for getting the keypad.
