Throw an extra key in a HitchSafe! I've thought about buying one of these for when I go to the beach and could lock my keys and phone in the truck so nothing gets wet. http://www.hitchsafe.com/

Well thank you Fomoco ! Over a dozen replies, and finally someone who thinks a non-chipped key is a good idea

Excellent point 06yz250f.

I would NEVER use a keypad, as my alarm remotely unlocks my doors, starts my truck, set / unsets my alarm, etc.

Hey Rockpick, I actually have 1 extra chipped key that came with the truck, but I'd prefer not to put that in a magnetic key box under my truck.... and it won't fit in my wallet.
Still, it's nice to know that I could get a new chipped key for a relatively cheap price, if I ever lost one of the two I have. Thank you.

Hey Fireman, I don't mean to surprise you .....but my hitch is in use 95% of the time I'm using my truck !

Peace,
Fish

I hate the magnetic key boxes. I've lost several keys over the years. Try putting a non-PATS key behind the license plate (using one of the screws that holds the plate).

I was talking with a fellow F150 owner about spare keys for our trucks, and we both already knew that the "chipped" keys are WAAAY expensive.

So, he told me he just went down and had a non-chipped key made for about $3, which he carries in his wallet. Okay, granted it won't start his truck, but it doesn't need to. If he ever locks his chipped key inside his truck (again) he can just open the door, to get to them.
First time I heard this idea was from a local locksmith who was cutting another PATS key for me last year. He offered to cut another non-chip key for about $2 so I could hide it on the frame of my truck in the event I ever locked the real key inside.

Even though he sold them in his store, he wasn't a big fan of those little magnetic boxes. Said he went on too many calls to unlock vehicles where the driver thought he had the spare in a little magnetic box and found out the hard way the box fell off somewhere.

His suggestion, which I did, was to just strap the spare key to the frame somewhere with a zip-tie or two.

On my last 2 trucks I zip tied my keys with a skinny zip tie. When the key was twisted it would break the zip tie fairly easily but never moved an inch when set put.

I use the magnetic hide-a-key box on all my vehicles.
Chipped keys are wrapped in plastic.
Ten years later they still work, probably went to it about four times in that span.

The hard part is talking wife/daughter through the location over the phone. Frustrating for both parties on the line but, it has always saved me a long drive.

These are like 3 for $10.
Typically a truck is high enough that there are a many good locations for these things.

I position mine so that the magnet is not 'load bearing' it only has to keep the box from sliding.

I know why you wouldn't want to have a chipped key under your truck...in case anyone found it. But that $20 key from ebay will turn into an extra $70 when the dealer has to program it, if you don't have 2 working PATS key.

To me its just cheap insurance incase one is lost, but most locksmiths usually program for a little less...maybe around $50.

Good, cheap idea. I have been locked out before with the motor running and convienantly forget the keypad code cause i never use it.

BUT, if you have remote start and had to put a key with a chip somewhere for it to "remote start" then this key w/out the chip would start the truck in theory. Just thought I'd throw that out there, not 100% sure as I dont have a cheap-o key to try it with.
